♦India to host Indian Ocean Region defence ministers’ one-day meet

  • Defence minister Rajnath Singh will host a meeting of his counterparts from countries in the Indian Ocean Region on 4th Feb with an eye to boosting India’s role as a security partner of choice as well as securing markets for India-made defence hardware.
  • The one-day meeting of the Indian Ocean Region defence ministers is taking place on the sidelines of the Aero-India show in Bengaluru.
  • The broad theme of the conclave is ‘Enhanced Peace, Security and Cooperation in the Indian Ocean’.

♦Aero India 2021 being organised in Bengaluru on Feb 3-5

  • Aero India 2021 is being organised at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka, Bengaluru by the Department of Defence Production of the Defence Ministry from February 3 to 5, 2021. Its theme is: ‘A Runway to a Billion Opportunities’.
  • The three-day event will focus on India’s indigenous defence sector capabilities.

♦PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Chauri Chaura centenary celebrations

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chauri Chaura centenary celebrations at Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh through video conferencing on February 4, 2021.
  • The Prime Minister also released a postal stamp dedicated to mark the beginning of centenary celebrations of the Chauri Chaura incident. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was present on the occasion.

Note: About Chauri Chaura

  • The Chauri Chaura incident took place on February 4, 1922 at Chauri Chaura in the Gorakhpur district of British India. The Mahatma Gandhi-led Non-cooperation movement was underway then.
  • At least 22 policemen and three civilians were killed in the incident.

♦Airbus Signs MoU with GMR Group To Collaborate On Aviation Services In India

  • The MoU was signed at Aero India 2021. Airbus and GMR Group will team up to explore potential synergies in several strategic areas of aviation services, including maintenance, components, training, digital and airport services.
  • As part of the MoU, Airbus and GMR will collaborate to explore a broad scope of aviation services both for commercial and military aircraft to benefit the entire aerospace ecosystem in the country.


♦Additional Director Praveen Sinha appointed acting chief of CBI

  • CBI Additional Director Praveen Sinha, a 1988-batch Gujarat cadre IPS, has been appointed acting chief of the agency till a decision on a new director is taken to succeed Rishi Kumar Shukla who retired on February 3, 2021 after a two-year fixed stint.
  • The CBI director is chosen by a high-powered committee of the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and Chief Justice of India.

♦Zoho’s Sridhar Vembu appointed to National Security Advisory Board

  • Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has been appointed to the reconstituted National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) led by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. The members of NSAB typically have two-year terms.
  • Other new members in this term include former ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan, Anshuman Tripathy, faculty at IIM Bangalore, and Arun K. Singh, former ambassador to France and the United States.

♦Jeff Bezos to step down as Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy to take over

  • Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos will leave his post later this year, turning the helm over to the company’s top cloud executive Andy Jassy.
  • Jassy joined Amazon in 1997 and has led Amazon’s Web Services cloud team since its inception.

♦Indo-US military exercise ‘Yudh Abhyas’ to be held in Rajasthan from Feb 8 to 21

  • The 16th edition of Indo-US joint military exercise ‘Yudh Abhyas’ will be held in Rajasthan between February 8 and 21.
  • The exercise near the India-Pakistan border aims at enhancing cooperation and interoperability between the two armies and will focus on counter-terrorism operations under the United Nations mandate.

♦Ajay Singh re-elected as BFI President

  • Ajay Singh has been elected as the President of Boxing Federation of India (BFI) for the second consecutive term on 3rd Feb.
  • During the general elections held in the city hotel here in Gurugram today, Ajay Singh defeated challenger Ashish Shelar by a margin of 10 votes as he won 37-27 in the final counting.

♦Ashok Dinda announces retirement from all forms of cricket

  • Fast bowler Ashok Dinda, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The 36-year-old right-handed pacer made his first-class debut for Bengal in 2005 and played for 15 years in Bengal cricket.
  • He made his international debut in 2009, in a T20I against Sri Lanka, followed by making his ODI debut in Zimbabwe in 2010. He played 13 ODIs and 9 T20I matches for India.

♦4 February- International Day of Human Fraternity

  • International Day of Human Fraternity is observed on 4th February globally. International Day of Human Fraternity aims to underline the importance of raising awareness about different cultures and religions, or beliefs, and the promotion of tolerance.
  • It also aims to educate people that tolerance,  pluralistic tradition,  mutual respect, and the diversity of religions and beliefs promote human fraternity.

♦4 February – World Cancer Day

  • World Cancer Day 2021 is observed to spread awareness, inspire change and reduce the global impact of cancer. The day is celebrated on 4th February every year and this year marks the ultimate year of the ‘I Am and I Will’ campaign which began in 2019.
  • The aim to observe World Cancer Day is to reduce misconceptions about cancer and to help people in getting the right information about it. It also offers a chance to make an impact in the betterment of the life of cancer patients and survivors.
