Maharashtra the first state government to announces free and cashless insurance to the all citizens

  • Maharashtra government announced free health insurance scheme to all its citizens, state health minister Rajesh Tope said on 2nd May. It is the first state in India to take such initiative.
  • Under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, people in the state can avail the benefits of free and cashless health insurance. Documents such as ration card and domicile certificate are essential to apply for the scheme.
  • At present, the scheme covers 85% of the population; but benefits are now extended to the remaining 15%, said Rajesh Tope. From now on, the state government, semi-government employees and white ration card holders will be able to apply for this scheme.

  • The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) organized an IDEAthon on “The future of River Management’ to explore how the COVID-19 crisis can shape River Management strategies for the future.
  • The IDEAthon examined how the social angle of rivers can be leveraged on to address other crises.
  • The IDEAthon sought to brainstorm the learnings from COVID-19 pandemic, the following lockdown and its impact on river management.

  • The National Science and Technology Management Information (NSTMIS), Department of Science and Technology (DST), has conducted a survey on Research and Development (R&D) Statistics and Indicators 2019-20. As per the survey, India ranks 3rd among countries in a scientific publication. The first two ranks were occupied by USA and China.

  • The survey included more than 6800 S&T Institutions spread across varied sectors like central government, state governments, higher education, public sector industry, and private sector industry in the country. A response rate of more than 90% was achieved.

PM Modi to Attend Virtual NAM Summit on Subcontinent's Role in Covid-19 Pandemic on 4th May

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in a virtual summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on 4th May to enhance coordination of the member states in their fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
  • For PM Modi, Monday’s summit will be the first NAM meeting that he will attend since becoming the Prime minister in 2014.
  • In a first for an Indian Prime Minister, Modi skipped both the NAM summit in 2016 and 2019. India was represented by the vice president in the last two summits in 2016 in Venezuela and 2019 in Azerbaijan.
  • Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had participated at the Tehran NAM meet in 2012.
  • Azerbaijan is the president of the NAM till 2022 and Monday’s summit is convened by its president Ilham Aliyev.

  • Domestic rating agency Icra on 4th May estimated that the country’s GDP might contract by as much as 20 per cent in the June quarter and is expected to overcome some lost ground in the remainder of the year but still close 2020-21 down by up to 2 per cent.
  • The agency’s earlier economic forecast was a range, according to which the GDP may either expand by 1 per cent or contract by 1 per cent in 2020-21.

US-based Silver Lake buys 1.15% stake in Jio Platforms for Rs 5,656 cr

  • Reliance Jio Platforms (Jio Platforms), a subsidiary of Reliance Industries (RIL), is selling 1.15 per cent stake to private equity (PE) firm Silver Lake for Rs 5,655.75 crore.
  • The investment – the second in a fortnight – highlights its focus on new commerce business and will help it pare debt.
  • While the deal is smaller than the one with Facebook for 9.99 per cent stake, it comes at a 12.5 per cent premium.
