India Post Released Stamp on Former Prime Minister I.K. Gujral

  • India Post has released a commemorative postage stamp on former PM I.K. Gujral on 4th December 2020. Shri Inder Kumar Gujral was sworn in as the 12th Prime Minister of India. Indra Kumar Gujral (4 December 1919 – 30 November 2012) .
  • About I.K. Gujral: Prime Minister of India, Shri Gujral was the Minister of External Affairs from June 1, 1996 and held additional charge of the Ministry of Water Resources from June 28, 1996. He was the Minister of External Affairs earlier during 1989-1990. He was Ambassador of India to U.S.S.R. (Cabinet Rank) from 1976-1980. Prime Minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998.

♦Majerhat Bridge named “Jai Hind” to Mark Netaji’s 125th Birth Anniversary

Majerhat Bridge named “Jai Hind” to Mark Netaji’s 125th Birth Anniversary

  • West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee named the newly built “Majerhat bridge” in Kolkata as ‘Jai Hind’ bridge to commemorate the 125th Birth Anniversary of Subash Chandra Bose.
  • The new bridge has been built in the place of an old one which collapsed in September 2018. It is 650-metres long and connects the Central part of Kolkata to the Southwestern suburbs of Behala and others.

  • Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has onboarded Akshay Kumar as the brand ambassador of its adult nutrition brand, Horlicks Protein Plus.
  • Akshay Kumar, will represent the core values of the brand and encourage urban Indian adults to fight protein deficiency everyday by making ‘Protein ka routine’.

Indian village school teacher Ranjitsinh Disale wins $1 million global prize

  • An Indian schoolteacher has been awarded the 2020 Global Teacher Prize — and has vowed to give half of the $1 million prize money to the runners-up.
  • The award, which is run by the Varkey Foundation in partnership with UNESCO, celebrates “exceptional” teachers who have made an outstanding contribution to their profession.
  • Ranjitsinh Disale, a teacher at Zilla Parishad Primary School, in the village of Paritewadi in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, was chosen as winner from more than 12,000 nominations and applications, from over 140 countries around the world.

Indian, Russian navies conduct Passage Exercise in eastern Indian Ocean Region

  • On the occasion of ‘Navy Day’, the Indian Navy on 4th Dec began a two-day Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Russian Federation Navy (RuFN) in the Eastern Indian Ocean Region (IOR) aimed at enhancing interoperability, improving understanding and imbibing best practices between both the navies.
  • The exercise would also involve advanced surface and anti-submarine warfare exercises, weapon firings, seamanship exercises and helicopter operations

♦Vice President releases a book on Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam

  • The Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu has released the book titled “40 Years with Abdul Kalam- Untold Stories”, a book on the life of the former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
  • The book was authored by Dr A.Sivathanu Pillai. The book is published by Pentagon Press LLP and the foreword was written by Pranab Mukherjee, former president of India.

  • The International Volunteer Day (IVD), also called International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development is observed on 5 December every year. IVD

  • The IVD international observance was mandated by the UN General Assembly in 1985.

♦December 6-Mahaparinirvana Divas

  • The death anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, which falls on December 6 1956, is dubbed as Mahaparinirvana Divas. On this day each year, millions of people throng to Dr Ambedkar’s Samadhi in Mumbai, which is called Chaitya bhoomi to pay respect to the father of Indian Constitution.
  • In 1956, he converted to Buddhism and initiated mass conversions of the lips. He was awarded with the India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna in 1990.

♦Actor Ravi Patwardhan passes away at 84

  • Actor Ravi Patwardhan, known for his work in Hindi and Marathi cinema as well as theatre, passed away on 5th Dec, following a massive heart attack. He was 84.
  • In his career, which began in the late 1970s, Ravi Patwardhan played a variety of roles in films, TV shows and plays. One of his notable Hindi film roles came in Tezaab. He also starred in movies like Ankush, Jhanjaar, Bond and Yeshwant. He was last seen in TV show Aggabai Sasubai.
