♦Centre sets up panel to work out CET headed by R P Tiwari

  • The UGC set up a seven-member committee on December 23, headed by Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Punjab R P Tiwari, “to consider the issue (of) holding common entrance test at undergraduate level only from the next academic year in central universities to provide a single platform for admission”.
  • The new NEP, released in July 2020, advocates reducing the number of entrance tests.

♦Kerala to host 4th Global Ayurveda Festival from March 12, 2021

  • The fourth Global Ayurveda Festival – Kerala (GAF2021), aimed at a global discussion and development of ayurveda, would be held from March 12 to 19 as a virtual meet.
  • “The conference will focus on the relevance of ayurveda in the post-Covid-19 world and the potential of ayurveda in enhancing immunity.

U.S. Congress passes ‘Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act’

  • The U.S. Congress has passed the ‘Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act’ to increase the number of scholarships for Pakistani women in higher education under merit and needs-based programme.
  • The bill requires the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to award at least 50% of scholarships under a Pakistan-based higher education scholarship programme to Pakistani women, from 2020 to 2022, across a range of academic disciplines and in accordance with existing eligibility criteria.

  • Indian multinational two-wheeler and three-wheeler manufacturing company, Bajaj Auto has become the most valuable two-wheeler company in the world, after it crossed a market capitalization of INR one trillion (more than Rs. 1 lakh crore) on January 01, 2021.
  • The share price of Bajaj Auto Ltd, closed at INR 3,479 per share on NSE making its market capitalization Rs 100,6.70 billion at this price. It could not have come at a better time as Bajaj has hit the 75th year in business. Bajaj Auto has a strong presence in the domestic market and it exports to more than 70 countries across the globe.

♦Argentine filmmaker Pablo Cesar to head 51st IFFI”s International Jury

  • The International Jury for 51st edition of International Film Festival of India has been announced with eminent filmmakers from across the world.
  • The Jury will comprise Pablo Cesar of Argentina as Chairman, Prasanna Vithanage of Sri Lanka, Abu Bakr Shawky of Austria, Priyadarshan of India and Rubaiyat Hossain of Bangladesh.

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on 5th Jan cancelled his Republic Day visit to India later this month, citing the need to oversee the Covid-19 pandemic response at home.
  • “Prime Minister Boris Johnson hopes to be able to visit India in the first half of 2021, and ahead of the UK’s G7 Summit that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to attend as a guest.

World Bank Signs $105 Million Project to Improve Waterways in West Bengal

  • The Government of India, the Government of West Bengal and the World Bank signed a $105 million project to improve the inland water transport infrastructure in Kolkata, West Bengal.
  • The West Bengal Inland Water Transport, Logistics and Spatial Development Project will facilitate passenger and freight movement across the Hooghly river; undertake spatial planning to improve accessibility in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area; enhance the quality of life of its residents; and contribute to the growth of the state’s logistics sector.

Assam Rifles Public School becomes first Khelo India Sports School from North-East

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju on 4th Jan launched the Assam Rifles Public School (ARPS) in Shillong as a Khelo India Sports School. At present, nine Sports Schools have been approved across the country, out of which five are managed by Defence and Para-military forces.
  • In the North-East region, Assam Rifles Public School is the first Sports School announced under the Khelo India scheme.

♦Teimour Radjabov won Airthings Masters

  • GM Teimour Radjabov won the Airthings Masters on 3rd Jan. The Azerbaijani grandmaster beat GM Levon Aronian in one more game and drew twice to clinch the $60,000 first prize.
  • GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave came in third after beating GM Daniil Dubov in their second match.
