♦RBI to introduce LEI for large-value transactions in RTGS/NEFT from April

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to introduce the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) system for all payment transactions of value ₹50 crore and above undertaken by entities (non-individuals) using the Reserve Bank-run Centralised Payment Systems with effect from April 1.
• LEI is a 20-digit number used to uniquely identify parties to financial transactions worldwide. It was conceived as a key measure to improve the quality and accuracy of financial data systems for better risk management post the global financial crisis.
• In India, LEI can be obtained from Legal Entity Identifier India Ltd. (LEIL), which is also recognised as an issuer of LEI by the Reserve Bank under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.

♦India’s growth to rebound to 5.4% in FY 22: World Bank

• The World Bank estimates India’s growth to recover to 5.4% in FY22, as the rebound from a low base is offset by muted private investment growth given financial sector weaknesses.
• Output is estimated to contract by 9.6% in fiscal year 2020-21, due to drop in household spending and private investment.

♦SMCB becomes India’s 1st urban co-operative bank to transition to SFB

• Uttar Pradesh-based, Shivalik Mercantile Co-operative Bank (SMCB) has become the first urban co-operative bank (UCB) in India to receive a licence from RBI to operate as a Small Finance Bank (SFB). The RBI had given an 18-month timeline to commence business.
• SMCB received the commercial banking license from banking regulator Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on January 06, 2021, to transition to an SFB, under the voluntary transition scheme. The Shivalik Small Finance Bank (SSFB) will start its banking operations from April 2021.

 ♦Karan Bajwa to head Google Cloud in Asia Pacific

• Google Cloud has announced the elevation of Karan Bajwa as its new leader for the Asia Pacific.
• Presently, Bajwa leads Google Cloud in India. He will lead all regional revenue and go-to-market operations for Google Cloud, including on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Google Workspace. He succeeds Rick Harshman who leaves the organisation for a new opportunity.

♦Claire Polosak became first woman to officiate in a men’s Test

• For the first time in 144 years of Test-match cricket, a woman – Australia’s Claire Polosak – has officiated in the longest format of the game, as the fourth or reserve umpire, in the third Test between Australia and India, which started at the SCG on 7th Jan.
• It is far from being the first time Polosak, 32, has led the way for women umpires. In April last year, she officiated in the final match of the World Cricket League Division 2 between Namibia and Oman.

• In UT Ladakh, Khelo India Ice Hockey Tournament organised at Chiktan in Kàrgil district.
• Along with 11 teams from different villages of Chiktan, for the first time two Women Teams of Chiktan also  participated in the Khelo India Games.

♦India & Israel successfully test MRSAM air defence system

• India and Israel successfully tested a Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) defence system. The MRSAM missile defence system has been developed jointly by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to deal with airstrikes by enemy countries.
• Currently being used by all three wings of the Indian Army as well as Israel Defence Forces (IDF), the air and missile defence system was a joint venture of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the IAI.

Obituary

♦Congress leader K K Ramachandran Master passes away at 78

• Former Minister and veteran Congress leader K K Ramachandran died of a heart attack on 7th Jan. He was 78.
• Popularly known as Ramachandran Master, the Congress leader had represented the party as an MLA six times – three times from Kalpetta and thrice from Sultan Bathery Assembly constituency.
• He was Minister for Food & Civil Supplies in the A K Antony Ministry from 1995 and Health Minister in the Oommen Chandy Ministry from 2004. He resigned in 2006.
