PM Modi inaugurates world's first double-stack container train

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 7th Jan dedicated the 306-km New Rewari-New Madar section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) to the nation. Through video-conferencing, Modi also flagged off the world’s first double-stack long-haul 1.5-km-long container train hauled by electric traction from New Ateli-New Kishangarh.
  • “The ‘mahayagya’ to modernise the country’s infrastructure today gained a new momentum.” This dedicated freight corridor project is being seen as a game changer for India in the 21st century, said Modi.

  • Elon Musk has just become the richest person in the world, with a personal fortune valued at $185 billion (£136 billion)according to a Bloomberg report; the first time the Tesla CEO has topped the global rankings.
  • He takes the title from Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, who has been the world’s wealthiest person since 2017.

♦Indian-American Raj Iyer becomes U.S. Army’s first CIO

  • Indian-American Dr Raj Iyer has taken over as the first Chief Information Officer of the US Army, after the Pentagon created the position in July 2020.
  • Dr Raj Iyer is one of the highest-ranking Indian-American civilians in the US Department of Defence.

  • The Indian economy is estimated to report its worst-ever contraction of 7.7 per cent in 2020-21, the National Statistical Office (NSO).The Indian economy had grown at 4.2 per cent in 2019-20.
  • Indian economy is likely to rebound with an 8.9 per cent growth in the fiscal year beginning April 2021, IHS Markit said.

RBI appoints Rabi Narayan Mishra as full-time director of College of Supervisors

  • The Reserve Bank on 6th Jan its College of Supervisors (CoS), which was functioning in a limited way in virtual mode since May 2020, is now being fully operationalised with full-time director supported by an Academic Advisory Council (AAC). Rabi Narayan Mishra, Former Executive Director of RBI, has been appointed as the director of the CoS.
  • As part of the measures to further strengthen supervision over regulated entities, the Reserve Bank had set up a College of Supervisors (CoS) to augment and reinforce supervisory skills among its regulatory and supervisory staff both at entry level and on a continuous basis.
  • The six-member Academic Advisory Council (AAC), chaired by RBI former Deputy Governor N S Viswanathan.

Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia appointed as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court

  • Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia appointed as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court informed the Ministry of Law and Justice.
  • The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind in the exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, appointed Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

♦Sanjay Kapoor elected All India Chess Federation president

  • Sanjay Kapoor was elected president of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) while Bharat Singh Chauhan retained the secretary’s post in the polls held online on 5th Jan.
  • Kapoor, representing Uttar Pradesh Chess Association, defeated incumbent PR Venketrama Raja in a close contest. Kapoor received 33 votes as against 31 of Raja.
  • Chauhan beat Ravindra Dongre 35-29. It was the first time since 2005 that the AICF elections saw a contest as the candidates were chosen unanimously in the last 15 years.

  • India’s head coach Ravi Shastri on 6th Jan launched a book ‘India’s 71-year Test: The Journey to Triumph in Australia’ ahead of the Syndey Test.
  • The book reflects on India’s first 12 tours to Australia – from 1947/48, to face Don Bradman’s side, tracing the evening out of a rivalry dominated by the host nation until the turn of the Millennium.

♦RBI officer Giridharan pens novel ‘Right Under our Nose’

  • A general manager at RBI, R Giridharan has authored his debut book ”Right Under our Nose”.
  • In ”Right Under Your Nose”, a murderer eliminates scientists right under the nose of the police and leaves forensics baffled.
