India third in Apac in AI tech readiness

  • India ranks third, after Singapore and Hong-Kong, in the Asia Pacific region on artificial intelligence readiness, according to a Salesforce study. India is one of few global economies to have implemented and perfected automated processes across many different industries.
  • However, the country ranks low on dynamism and innovation, impacting its business readiness. Indian AI start-ups are constrained by the fact that most small-and mid-sized businesses cannot afford to adopt or implement AI systems, said the report. India’s AI ecosystem is also held back by the lack of skilled professionals.

First-of-its-kind 'Voter Park' inaugurated in Gurugram

  • India’s first-of-its-kind ‘Voter Park’ was inaugurated in Gurugram on Thursday, aimed at increasing voter awareness and educating people about the electoral process.
  • Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Rajeev Ranjan inaugurated the park in Vikas Sadan building complex.
  • At the park, voters will get information about the polling process and the history of elections in the country, he said.
  • Ranjan said the objective of establishing Voter Park was also to motivate eligible people to vote in the Lok Sabha election, so that they can contribute to the progress of the country.

India to be Guest of Honour country at ADIBF 2019

  • UAE has announced that India will be the Guest of Honour country at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, ADIBF 2019, to be held from 24th to 30th of this month. The fair aims to highlight the UAE’s rich heritage, showcasing its authenticity and modernity, as well as its cultural and literary output.
  • India’s participation in the fair is expected to attract significant increase in the number of visitors with various events and activities which will be held throughout the entire duration of ADIBF.
  • The Indian Pavilion will host Indian writers, authors and literary scholars who will serve as ambassadors for the literature and art of their country.

At 0.1%, India's industrial growth falls to 20-month low in February

  • A contraction in manufacturing output, especially in the sensitive capital and consumer goods segment, pulled down industrial growth to a 20-month low of just 0.1 per cent in February.
  • The bottom crawling growth rate follows a 1.43 per cent growth in the previous month of January. The index of industrial production (IIP) has witnessed low growth since November, 2018, and is expected to remain muted owing to weak exports, rural distress, credit constraints and uncertainty over the election outcome, according to economists.
  • In the April-February period of the current financial year, industrial output grew at 4 per cent, as against 4.3 per cent in the same period of the previous financial year.

Nitin Chugh next Ujjivan SFB CEO likely

  • Nitin Chugh, digital banking head of private sector lender HDFC Bank, is likely to succeed Samit Ghosh, the managing director and chief executive of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank.
  • Mr. Ghosh, who is also the founder of Ujjivan SFB, will retire in November this year and the process to find a successor started last year.
  • According to sources, the Bengaluru-based small finance bank has already applied to the Reserve Bank of India for approval to appoint Mr. Chugh as the managing director and chief executive officer.

World economic growth to revive later this year, say G-20 chiefs

  • Global finance leaders gathered from the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank agree that the global economy has lost momentum this year. But they expect growth to pick up in the second half of 2019, as central bankers ease up on interest rates.
  • The global economy is likely to pull out of a brief growth slump later this year – with a little help from the world’s central banks and from U.S. and Chinese trade negotiators.
  • Global finance leaders gathered from the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank agree that the global economy has lost momentum this year. But they expect growth to pick up in the second half of 2019, as central bankers ease up on interest rates.
  • Still, a trade standoff between the United States and China threatens to dim the economic outlook.
  • The IMF cut its forecast for global growth from 3.6% last year to 3.3% in 2019, the slowest since the recession year 2009, but it predicts growth will return to 3.6% in 2020.

At 2.86%, CPI inflation at 5-month high in March on high food prices

  • The retail inflation rate touched a five-month high of 2.86 per cent in March, helped by the prices of food and health services.
  • The inflation rate, however, remained within the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) overall target range of 2-6 per cent, prompting economists to expect another 25-50 basis points’ cut in the policy rate by the monetary policy committee in 2019-20, though not in the next policy.
  • The food inflation rate rose to 0.30 per cent in March after witnessing a contraction in the past five months. In February, the food deflation rate stood at 0.73 per cent. This pushed up the overall inflation rate, from 2.57 per cent in February.
  • The core inflation rate (inflation rate sans food and fuel), meanwhile, fell to 4.97 per cent in March, from 5.36 per cent in February.

Gargi Kaul appointed Defence Finance Secretary

  • In a bureaucratic reshuffle, the Centre has appointed Gargi Kaul, a 1984-batch officer of the Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS), as Secretary, Defence Finance.
  • Kaul was earlier Financial Advisor, Defence Services in the Defence Ministry.
  • In an order issued on Tuesday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet appointed Sumeet Jerath — who was earlier Special Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) — as Special Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat.

Algeria’s interim President Abdelkader Bensalah announces July 4 presidential election

  • Algeria’s newly appointed interim President Abdelkader Bensalah on Wednesday announced the country would head to polls on July 4 to vote for a new president.
  • Bensalah was appointed president for a three-month transitional period after weeks of mass protests led to the resignation of long-serving leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika on April 2.
  • Since Bouteflika’s resignation, thousands of Algerians have taken to the country’s streets, opposing his succession by Bensalah, who they see as a loyalist of the former president.
  • However, the 77-year-old Bensalah is barred under the constitution from running in the upcoming election.
  • Most opposition politicians abstained from the parliamentary vote that awarded Bensalah the interim presidency.

  • Valtteri Bottas will start Formula One’s 1,000th world championship race from pole position after leading Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton in a front row lockout at the Chinese Grand Prix on Saturday.
  • Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel qualified third, ahead of 21-year-old Monegasque team mate Charles Leclerc who was unable to repeat his Bahrain Grand Prix pole of two weeks ago.
  • Bottas, who won the season opener in Australia and leads defending champion Hamilton by one point in the standings, was the third different driver to take pole this season in three races.
