DRDO set up SPACE,a premier testing and evaluation hub for sonar systems for Indian Navy
A state-of-the-art Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterisation and Evaluation (SPACE) was set up by the Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory of Defence Research and Development Organisation for the Indian Navy. The Secretary, Department of Defence (R&D) and Chairman DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat has inaugurated the SPACE platform at Underwater Acoustic Research Facility, Kulamavu in Idukki, Kerala.
More about SPACE:
The SPACE platform showcases the advancement of the Indian Navy technology. This platform will have two components, one will be above the surface of water and second will be a submersible platform that can be under the water lowered to depth upto 100m.
After the successful completion of the operations, the submersible second platform will be winched up and docked with the first platform.
Features:
There are some important features of the SPACE platform such as evaluation of complete sonar systems, quick deployment, easy recovery of scientific packages suitable for survey, data collection of air, surface and midwater, and reservoir floor parameters.
About DRDO:
The Defense Research and Development Organisation was established in 1958 with the aim of developing indigenous defense technologies for the Indian armed forces. The organization operates under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
DRDO consists of more than 50 laboratories which are involved in various research and development activities across different domains of defense technology. DRDO has developed a wide range of defense systems including missiles, radar systems, electronic warfare systems, aircraft, and naval systems.
DRDO is known for its successful missile programs such as Agni, Prithvi, BrahMos, and Akash missiles, among others.
About sonar system:
The full form of Sonar is Sound Navigation And Ranging. It’s a technique that uses sound propagation to navigate, communicate, or detect objects underwater.
Sonar systems emit sound pulses and then listen for echoes reflected back from objects underwater. By analyzing the time it takes for the sound to return and the characteristics of the echo, they can determine the distance, size, shape, and composition of underwater objects.
Sonar systems are used in various fields, including military applications for detecting submarines and underwater mines, commercial fishing for locating schools of fish, oceanography for mapping the ocean floor, and even in recreational boating for navigation and fish finding.
Conclusion:
The naval technology in India is evaluating with speed and new techniques are emerging with a fast pace. The introduction of the SPACE platform in the Indian navy paves the way for technological advancement.
