The state elections of 5 states were concluded yesterday (i.e. 10 March). The results were in favor of Bhartiya Janata Party which is currently in power in Centre. The five states of election results were released yester day are Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Goa.

Uttar Pradesh:

Total seats– 403

Leading alliance Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) – 266 seats, Samajwadi Party led alliance got 132 seats.

Punjab:

Total Seats- 117

Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Admi Party (AAP) won 92 seats which give to form a government in Punjab.

AAP has declared that, Bhagwant Mann AAP’s party member might be the Chief Minister of Punjab.

Manipur:

Total Seats- 60

Alliance of BJP won 30 seats.

Uttarakhand:

Total Seats- 70

BJP- led alliance won 48 seats

Goa:

Total Seats- 40

BJP won 20 seats in Goa.

Challenges:

For the BJP, this is a big victory due to its putting rest doubts that Modi’s appeal in state elections is going down. The BJP was combating internal discord in UP, in-fighting in Goa and had to change two chief ministers in Uttarakhand. The party issued victorious mostly on the back of a strong Modi campaign.

This commits the PM on a strong political wicket in comparison with the most leaders across important democracies in the world.

Implications for Reforms, Security:

It is very important point to be noted for Modi is the he is among the few G-7 or D-10 leaders to remain and grow in power since 2014. These results withdraw any uncertainty or doubt in the run-up to the general elections of 2024.
