“Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate” report by ILO
The International Labour Organization has recently released a report titled “Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate” to highlight the adverse effects of climate change in our daily work life.

Important Highlights of the report:
- Around 70% of all global workforce are highly vulnerable towards extreme heat due to rise in temperature.
- The epidemics of chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology are going to affect the Indian workforce. After the projections of India Meteorological Department, the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment had issued an advisory to make all states and Union Territories aware of the weather to safeguard their workers from extreme heat waves by improving facilities to drinking water, rescheduling of working hours and important measures.
- According to the report,the number of atrocities is alarming as there are around 22.85 million people getting injured by occupational injuries, 18,970 people die and 2.09 million disability adjusted life years are happening every year.
- Every year around 2.41 billion workforce out of 3.41 billion global workforce are vulnerable towards extreme heat.
- There were around 26.2 people getting affected from kidney disease due to excess heat at work in 2020.
- Over 1.6 billion workers globally are affected from solar ultraviolet radiations and 18,960 people die due to non melanoma skin cancer annually.
- 6 billion outdoor workers face adversities due to air pollution globally.
- According to the report,climate change remains one of the major concerns for unemployment including job losses, business assets damages, decreased Labour productivity, interruptions and forced migration.
- Due to climate change, there are around 1.2 billion jobs depending on farming, Forestry and fishing in danger globally.
Conclusion:
Climate change can exacerbate health issues such as heat-related illnesses, respiratory problems from air pollution, and vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue fever, potentially affecting workforce productivity and absenteeism.
Addressing the effects of climate change on the workforce requires proactive measures such as investing in resilience, adapting workplace practices, and transitioning to sustainable industries.
