Gender Report of the Global Education Monitoring 2024: UNESCO
The Gender Report of the Global Education Monitoring 2024 has recently been released by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The title of this report is “Technology on hee Terms”.
Highlights of the report:
- Information and communication technology can help to eradicate the barriers to access the valuable education for girls in crisis contexts.
- There is a huge difference between men and women when it comes to technology adoption as 130 million fewer women than men around the world have mobile phones and if we talk about the internet access the number goes down as 244 million fewer women have access to the internet than men.
- As per the report, social media has a negative impact on girls’ Education and negatively affects the overall well being. The interaction on social media reinforces the worsening socioemotional difficulties among girls.
- Cyber bullying is a threat to girls Education as the danger of deep fakes made by artificial intelligence.
- 15 percent of young female graduates follow STEM and the average share of STEM among male graduates is 35 percent.
- As per the report, the share of women holding jobs in Science, engineering and ICT sector is less as in the year of 2022, women held less than 25 percent of these jobs.
- Gender stereotypes and low expectations from parents as well as teachers are two main reasons for impacting girls’ aspirations in STEM.
Recommendations:
- There is a need to establish bodies to assess the algorithms of Education technology and the reasons behind the negative effects of well being.
- Encouraging girls to choose Science background and Artificial Intelligence and promote their career choices in Science field.
- Invest in gender responsive Education rather than following only an infrastructure approach. Provide training programmes to enhance digital Literacy among all.
