Google launched earthquake alert system in India

Google is going to introduce its highly useful earthquake alert system in India. Google has made its announcement that it has launched the Android Earthquake Alerts System in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), Ministry of Earth Sciences.

As we know that earthquake is a common natural disaster and its early detection and warning can create a vital difference in safeguarding lives and property.

The Android Earthquake Alerts System uses the built-in sensors in Android smart phones, which are known as accelerometers. These accelerometers can function as miniature seismometers.

How it will work?

As per the information received by Google, a plugged-in and charging Android phone detects the initial tremors of an earthquake and it would send this data to a central server.

The similar shaking waves detect in multiple phones in the same area the server would estimate the earthquake’s characteristics, including its epicenter and magnitude.

After estimating it rapidly sends alerts to nearby Android devices.

These alerts go along the internet at the speed of light and reach to users several seconds before the more severe shaking does.

The design of the alerts is user-friendly and it will available in various Indian languages supported by Android, ensuring accessibility for a broad range of users.

Compatibility:

The device of Android users has to be capable for running Android 5 or newer. Device is required to have Wi-Fi or cellular data connectivity and ensure that both the Android Earthquake Alerts and location settings are enabled.

There is an option for turning off Earthquake alerts in device settings also.

Google partnered with NDMA:

Google has made partnership with the NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) to complement government efforts in providing timely earthquake alerts and safety information.

Google has also collaborated with the NDMA to offer users safety information regarding natural disasters such as floods and cyclones through Google Search and Maps.

Good act: The introduction of the Android Earthquake Alerts System shows Google’s commitment to increasing disaster preparedness and response in India.
