Every year on 10th December people around the world celebrates Human Rights Day. It commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1948.

The celebration of Human Rights Day is focused on the fundamental rights and liberties to which all people worldwide are entitled simply by virtue of their humanity.

It has been celebrating and advocating for rights that transcend nationality, gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, religion, or any other distinction. This year marks the 74th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 72nd Human.

History of Human Rights Day:

Human Rights Day was formally instituted in 1950 after adopting of UNGA Resolution 423. (V). According to the resolution, all states (members and non-members) and interested organizations had been invited to observe this day to commemorate the proclamation of the UDHR and to increase their efforts in this field of human progress.

Human Rights Day has handled issues such as discrimination, diversity, education, freedom, poverty, torture, and equality over the last decade.

Importance to celebrate Human Rights Day:

The UDHR comprises 30 articles which drafts a wide range of fundamental human rights and freedoms to which all people from across the world are entitled. The UDHR serves as a guidepost for what all nations must strive for in order to meet basic human needs, whether socioeconomic or political.

Theme Human Rights Day 2022:

The theme of the Human Rights Day is “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All.”

Next Year on December 10, 2023, the world will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On the celebration of this upcoming milestone, a year-long campaign will be launched on December 10 this year to highlight the UDHR, emphasizing its legacy, relevance, and activism.
