India-Bangladesh inaugurated railway together

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina have jointly inaugurated the highly-anticipated Khulna-Mongla Port rail line and the Akhaura-Agartala railway.

The 7.9-km rail line from Akhaura to Agartala and a new 64-km Khulna–Mongla Port rail line both aim for acceleration of passengers and goods transport with India and other regional countries.

PM Modi said that it is the celebration to the success of India-Bangladesh cooperation. The relations between two countries are touching new heights.

Cross border rail link between India-Bangladesh:

The recently inaugurated Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link is spanned a total length of 12.24 km.

The project was executed with an Indian grant of Rs 392.52 crore to Bangladesh. A 6.78 km dual gauge rail line in Bangladesh and 5.46 km in Tripura are part of the project.

Benefits of the project:

The rail route from Agartala to Kolkata is around 1600 kilometers and takes 38 hours currently.

This route will be cut once the rail link opens and the travel time will come down by 10 hours.

Government of India gave a concessional Line of Credit to the project of the Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line which has total cost of USD $388.92 million. The project is involved with the construction of approximately 65 km of broad gauge rail route.

This initiative is benefited to both the countries as it is connecting Mongla, Bangladesh’s second-largest port, to the broad-gauge railway network in Khulna.

Connectivity between countries:

It will raise the operations of Mongla Port. The initiative might be boost the connectivity of Bangladesh with India, Nepal and Bhutan.

The rail link is constructed to set up a connection between Mongla Port and Siliguri in India through Panchagarh and Banglabandha in the north.

Tripura, Indian north-eastern state, shared an 856 km-long international border with Bangladesh. The state’s only road connectivity with the rest of the country is through Assam and a narrow strip of land in West Bengal’s Siliguri.
