5th September: India celebrates Teachers’ day

India celebrates Teachers’ Day on 5th September every year to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. This day celebrates teachers and teacher figures in one’s life and provides an occasion to give your gratitude to your teachers towards them.

Who was Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan?

Born: 1888

He was the country’s first Vice President and former President, scholar, philosopher, and Bharat Ratna awardee.

He completed his education with a master’s degree in Philosophy through scholarships. In 1917, he also authored a book called ‘The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore’.

Served:

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan served many important post and key roles for development of the country. He served as the vice-chancellor of Andhra University and also the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University in 1939.

He served as the first Vice President of India from 1952 to 1962. He served as the second president of India 1962 to 1967.

Awards and honors:

  • He was conferred with the country’s highest civilian awards Bharat Ratna in 1954.
  • He was an honorary member of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.
  • He was nominated for Nobel Prize for five times in Literature category.
  • The most prestigious Templeton Prize also conferred to him.

The reason behind celebrating Teachers’ Day on September 5:

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan had assumed office as the second President of India in 1962 at that time his students asked him to seek permission to celebrate September 5 as a special day. So he requested them to celebrate September 5 as Teachers’ Day to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of teachers to society.

Dr. Radhakrishnan often said that, teachers should be the best minds in the country.

From then September 5 has been celebrated as Teacher’s Day in the country across schools, colleges, universities, and educational institutions. Students do various activities with lots of engagements such as performances, dances, and elaborate shows and express their appreciation for their beloved teachers.

Teachers’ Day provides an opportunity to express gratitude to their mentors and acknowledge the profound influence teachers have had on their lives. Teachers are the foundation of quality education and often take pride in their students’ success.
