India gifts INS Kirpan to Vietnam

The Indian Navy gifted recently decommissioned INS Kirpan to Vietnam People’s Navy (VPN) for growing defence ties and strategic partnership between New Delhi and Hanoi.

This is the first-ever case of India offering a fully operational missile corvette to Vietnam.

Handing over ceremony:

The handing over ceremony was held at Cam Ranh in Vietnam and was commanded over by Adm R Hari Kumar, Chief of Naval Staff, Indian Navy and Rear Adm Pham Manh Hung, Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Chief of Staff, VPN.

Chief of Naval Staff, Adm R Hari Kumar stated that this occasion is a great honour for him to be a part of the handing over ceremony of one of the finest and longest-serving warships of the Indian Navy – Kirpan, to the esteemed Vietnam People’s Navy.

It underlines the deep-rooted friendship and strategic partnership between India and Vietnam.

About INS Kirpan:

• INS Kirpan is an indigenously-built missile corvette for Indian Navy.
• Recently it was decommissioned after completing 32 years of service to be gifted to Vietnam.
• Since its inception in 1991, the ship had been an integral part of the Navy’s Eastern Fleet and has participated in several operations.

Advantages for India:

• The development is being happened amid a growing Chinese influence in the South China Sea which is giving rise to territorial disputes with Vietnam in the region.
• Vietnam is a close Indian ally and has always resisted Chinese pressure on them over the years.
• Defence minister Rajnath Singh arranged a meeting with his counterpart in the Vietnam General Phan Van Giang in Hanoi in last visit to the country in June last year.
• There were many decision made including the extension of the $500 million Defence Line of Credit to Vietnam.
• A Joint Vision Statement had been signed by both countries on India-Vietnam Defence Partnership towards 2030.
• It had filled a pact on Mutual Logistics Support to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation between them.
