India got its first airbus C-295 aircraft
India has welcomed its first C-295 transport aircraft from the Airbus Defence and Space on the commencing of a substantial Rs 21,935-crore project which comprising 56 aircraft.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari welcomed officially the aircraft in Seville, Spain where Airbus will deliver the initial 16 aircraft in “fly-away” condition by 2025.
The other 40 aircrafts are planned to manufacture and assemble in India as part of a collaborative industrial partnership between Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems (TASL).
Features of the Airbus C-295:
- It has carrying payload capacity of up to 9 tonnes or 71 tonnes.
- It has run with a maximum cruise speed of 260 knots.
- It is equipped with air-to-air refueling for fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.
- It has retractable landing gear.
- It can cruise on altitudes up to 30,000 square feet.
- It has the ability to perform short take-offs and landings from unpaved, soft and sandy/grass airstrips.
- It is powered by two Pratty & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines.
- It can be endured up to 13 hours aloft.
Background of this project:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a manufacturing facility in Vadodara, Gujarat. This project had gained momentum in October 2022 as it was marking the first time a private consortium in India manufactured military aircraft.
This procurement of C-295 aircraft will be significant for the Indian Air Force as it looks for to retire its ageing Avro-748 planes, which have been in service for over six decades.
The first C-295 aircraft which has been constructed for India successfully completed its maiden flight and the second one is currently in the final assembly phase. The second aircraft will be delivered to the IAF in May 2024.
