India launches ‘Operation Kaveri’ for stranded Indians in Sudan
India has launched ‘Operation Kaveri’ to evacuate Indian nationals from conflict-torn Sudan. According to available information around 3,000 Indians are stranded in various parts of Sudan, including capital Khartoum and in distant provinces like Darfur.
Operation Kaveri:
- Operation Kaveri is already started to bring back our citizens stranded in Sudan.
- Indian Government sent two Indian Air Force aircraft and a Navy ship to evacuate stranded Indians in Sudan.
- Government of India has reported that about 500 Indians have reached Port Sudan to board INS Sumedha.
- The distance between Sudan’s capital city Khartoum and Port Sudan is about 850 kms.
- Two Indian Air Force vehicles C-130 are currently standing by in Jeddah.
Situation in Sudan:
The political crisis has been turned out in Sudan as a countrywide armed conflict after disagreement between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) over the Security Sector Reform (SSR) gyrated into an armed confrontation between the commanders of the two wings.
After the sudden conflict fired out, hundreds of Indians left stranded in the airport in Khartoum who subsequently took shelter in nearby hotels as fighting intensified.
Indians in the region shared videos of indiscriminate attacks that also targeted residences of Indian community, and looting of essential items by the rebel paramilitary.
The fighting also enclosed the Indian Embassy in Khartoum that forced the Indian diplomats to work remotely while they maintained contact with the members of the Indian community stranded in the country.
Evacuation operations were finally began on Id after airlifting a few Indian nationals along with citizens of several “brotherly and friendly” countries by Saudi Arabian military forces. India is continuously connecting to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the United States, the U.K., and Egypt over the evolving situation on the ground.
