India Launches Spoofed Calls Prevention System to Combat Cybercrime

The DoT’s collaboration with TSPs ensures that these calls, typically used for cyber frauds such as fake government impersonations and threats of arrest, do not reach unsuspecting users.
  • Public Engagement and Reporting: To further combat the issue, the public is encouraged to report suspicious calls through the Chakshu facility on the Sanchar Saathi platform. This portal allows users to actively participate in identifying potential threats and contribute to creating a safer telecom environment.
  • Cybercrime Reporting and Assistance: In cases where individuals fall victim to such frauds, they can seek help via the cybercrime helpline 1930 and the cybercrime.gov.in website. These platforms offer guidance and support to victims of cybercrime, ensuring that incidents are properly addressed.

  • Prevention of Cyber Fraud: As a direct result of this system, millions of mobile connections linked to fraudulent activities have been disconnected. Over 1.77 crore fake or forged mobile connections have been identified and removed from the network, with 33.48 lakh connections linked to cybercrime hotspots being terminated.
  • Blocking Fraudulent Devices and SIMs: The system has also led to the blocking of over 49,000 mobile handsets used in cybercrime and more than 2 lakh SMS templates associated with malicious activities. It is a part of the broader effort to clean up India’s telecom ecosystem by blocking devices and SIMs that are used to defraud citizens.
  • Enhancing Digital Safety: This initiative is part of a broader effort by the DoT to secure India’s telecom landscape from cyber threats.
