India observing 23rd March as Shaheed Diwas

 

Martyrs’ Day or Shaheed Diwas is observed on March 23 to commemorate the martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Shivram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar who were hanged to death by the Britishers.

Indian remembering the sacrifice of these three brave men today (i.e.) March 23, 2023 which is 92nd death anniversary.

The Prime Minister and the President of India pay homage to the soldiers who had sacrificed their lives for the country and did a two-minute silence in their memory.

History of three brave men:

To revenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, three young revolutionary freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev had decided to assassinate James Scott, but due to mistaken identity, they killed another superintendent of police, John P. Saunders.

They were not stop at this point even they had made another plan of attack on the Central Legislative Assembly. They also destined to stop the passage of the Public Safety Bill and the Trade Dispute Act.

Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru were all given the death penalty for attempting a bomb at the Central Legislative Assembly on April 8, 1929. On March 23, 1931, the trio was executed in the Lahore prison.

Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev were hanged at the age of 23, whereas Rajguru was only 22.

Bhagat Singh:

Born: 27 September, 1907

Another name: Shaheed-e-Azam

He was charismatic Indian revolutionary and founded an organisation named ‘Naujawan Bharat Sabha’

He written a book titled ‘Why I Am an Atheist’

Shukhdev Thapar:

Born: 15 May 1907

He was an Indian revolutionary who sacrificed his life to independent India.

Sukhdev had founded an organisation called ‘Hindustan Socialist Republican Association’.

Shivram Rajguru:

Born: 24 August 1908

Shivram was an Indian revolutionary freedom fighter from Maharashtra.

He sacrificed his life for freedom of the country at the age of 22.

Significance:

  • Every year on March 23, India observing Shaheed Diwas to honour Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar.
  • The main aim to observe Shaheed Diwas is to remember the young freedom warriors who gave their lives in the struggle for their country’s independence.
  • Recently Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has declared this day as the gazetted holiday in the state.
  • Even numerous academic and political institutions also observe it in honour of brave three martyrs which are still remaining inspirational figures for the younger generations.
