India ready for Samudrayaan Mission with Matsya 6000

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju recently shared pictures of a submersible ‘Matsya 6000’ for India’s ambitious ‘Samudrayaan Mission’. India’s ‘Samudrayaan Mission’ is being developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in Chennai, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

Just the some days about achieving a successful soft-landing on the Moon’s South Pole, India is ready to flag in ocean by sending three humans to a depth of 6 km into the ocean for deep-sea exploration and biodiversity assessments.

Union minister at NIOT:

Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju has just visited NIOT in Chennai and reviewed the submersible and provided updates on India’s first manned deep ocean mission.

The submersible ‘MATSYA 6000’ is currently under construction at National Institute of Ocean Technology at Chennai which will vehicle for India’s first manned Deep Ocean Mission ‘Samudrayaan’.

Matsya 6000:

The ‘MATSYA 6000’ vehicle has a normal operational endurance of 12 hours and can last up to 96 hours in emergencies to ensure human safety. The targeted completion year for the mission is 2026.

This submersible will enabling direct human observation in the deep ocean, assisting in the exploration of mineral-rich resources such as Nickel, Cobalt, Rare Earths, and Manganese, along with sample collection for analysis.

Advantages through this mission:

Scientific research and technological advancements can be done through this mission.

It will encourage innovations in underwater engineering, benefit areas such as asset inspection, tourism, and promoting ocean literacy.

The mission includes a 6000-meter depth-rated Integrated Mining Machine and unmanned vehicles (both tethered and automated) for deep-sea resource exploration and biodiversity assessment.

Major components of the Samudrayaan mission:

  • It will create technological development for deep sea mining and manned submersibles and under water robotics.
  • It will develop ocean climate change advisory services.
  • It will establish technological innovations for exploration and conservation of deep-sea biodiversity.
  • It will explore and survey Deep Ocean.
  • It will analyze energy and freshwater generation from ocean resources.
  • It will establish an advanced marine station for ocean biology.
