India to Bharat: 1947 to 2023
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has replaced the name India with a Sanskrit word in dinner invitations sent to guests attending this week’s Group of 20 (G20) summit.
Droupadi Murmu is referred to as “President of Bharat” instead of “President of India” in the invitation sent to G20 attendees on Tuesday.
G20 Summit:
India is going to host the annual G20 summit in New Delhi on Saturday and Sunday.
The summit will be attended by many world leaders such as US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron etc.
With the debut on changing the name of India to Bharat is going to make notable summit in its history.
Names of India:
Our country is officially known with two names ‘India and Bharat’ but the former is most commonly used, both domestically and internationally.
The literature and other forms of popular culture called our country as Hindustan often.
While the word ‘Bharat’ is an ancient Sanskrit word that many historians believe dates back to early Hindu texts.
Support to the new name:
Officials of Modi’s right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) back the change in nomenclature with an argument that the name India was introduced by British colonials and is a “symbol of slavery”.
Changed names in recent past:
The current government is trying to change names related to India’s Mughal and colonial past from very long period.
The NDA led government had changed Aurangzeb Road in New Delhi to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road.
The government has also changed the name of a colonial-era avenue in the heart of New Delhi that is used for ceremonial military parades.
Criticism over changing name:
India’s opposition parties are criticizing the government’s move.
Article 1 in Constitution of India:
Article 1 in the Constitution spoke that ‘Bharat, that was India, shall be a Union of States.’
If Government of India wants to change the name of the country it has to bring out resolution in parliament’s special session with the bill of changing name of the country to Bharat from India.
