Trump Halts Iran Strikes, Signals Imminent Deal

  • S. President Donald Trump gave Iran a 48-hour warning on Saturday, asking it to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, or else the U.S. would attack its power and energy systems.
On Monday, he said the attacks would be delayed for five days after what he called “very good and productive” talks with Iran.
  • In a social media post, he said that in the last two days, the U.S. and Iran had positive discussions to try and completely stop the conflict in the Middle East.
Later, while speaking in Washington, he said the talks were “very, very strong” and that there was a real chance of reaching an agreement.
  • However, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf denied that any talks had happened, calling such reports “fake news” meant to help the U.S. and Israel.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry also rejected these claims and said there were no negotiations with the U.S.
  • At the same time, Iran’s military group IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) said it had launched missile and drone attacks on the S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and on American bases in other West Asian countries.
  • The Iranian Speaker said that the people of Iran want strong punishment for those they see as enemies, and that all leaders are united with the public in this goal.
  • Iran’s news agency IRNA reported that some friendly countries had sent messages saying the U.S. wanted talks, but Iran did not reply.
Another agency, Mizan, said that Trump delayed the strikes to control rising energy prices and gain time for military planning.
  • Iran’s Foreign Ministry said that even though some countries are trying to reduce tension, Iran believes it did not start the war, and such requests should be directed to the U.S.
  • After Trump’s warning, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters said that if Iran’s power systems are attacked, it will strike power and energy targets in Gulf countries hosting U.S. bases and also in Israel.
  • A military spokesperson also said Iran is ready to completely destroy U.S. economic interests in West Asia if needed.
  • Trump said that because the talks seemed positive and detailed, he told the Department of War to delay attacks on Iran’s energy systems for five days, depending on how talks continue.
He added that talks will continue throughout the week.
  • He also said that his envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner had already held talks with Iran on Sunday, and more discussions are planned.
He repeated that the talks were very strong and that there was agreement on most major issues.
  • Trump ended by saying there is a real chance of a deal, and mentioned that the U.S. is dealing with a “highly respected leader”, but did not name who.

Centre considers delimitation based on 2011 Census to implement women’s quota

  • The Union government said on Monday that it is planning to bring a new amendment Bill to carry out delimitation (redrawing of constituencies) using the 2011 Census, so that the Women’s Reservation Act, 2023 can be implemented before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
  • As per the plan, the total number of Lok Sabha seats may increase from 543 to 816, and 273 seats will be reserved for women.
  • The amendment may be introduced in the current Budget Session or in a Special Session called for this purpose.
  • Even though the draft is not yet shared, sources say the government wants to keep the same proportion of seats for all States.
  • This is being done because some States, especially in the South, are worried that States with lower population growth may lose representation compared to more populated States.
  • Under the proposal, every State may see about a 50% increase in seats, but the proportion will remain balanced.
  • According to Article 82 of the Constitution, delimitation should happen after the first Census conducted after 2026.
But this proposal may allow the use of the 2011 Census, so the process can start earlier without waiting for the new Census.
  • The plan may also include increasing seats in State Assemblies.
  • The Women’s Reservation Act, passed in September 2023, had said that implementation would happen only after Census and delimitation.
  • The 2021 Census was delayed due to COVID-19 and is now expected to start next month.
  • Without changes, the Act could have been implemented after 2030, but the government now wants to speed up the process.
  • On Monday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah met leaders from several Opposition parties like Supriya Sule, P.V. Midhun Reddy, Asaduddin Owaisi, and Arvind Sawant.
  • However, parties like Trinamool Congress and Left parties did not attend the meeting.
  • A separate meeting was held with NDA partners
Earlier, discussions had also been held with Congress and Samajwadi Party.
  • The Congress will hold a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the proposal.
  • A government source said that the amendment will need a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament, which is why the government is talking to all parties.
