Indian American won International Prize in Statistics
A prominent Indian-American mathematician and statistician Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao awarded the 2023 International Prize in Statistics at the age of 102. The International Prize in Statistics is considered as the Nobel Prize in the field.
His monumental work 75 years ago proved to be revolutionized statistical thinking. His work continues to be used a profound influence on science.
Rao will receive the prize of a USD 80,000 and an award at the biennial International Statistical Institute World Statistics Congress in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Remarkable papers:
In his remarkable 1945 paper published in the Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society, Rao showed three fundamental results that paved the way for the modern field of statistics and let statistical tools used in science to a great extent today.
Indian American mathematician C.R.Rao:
Born: 10 September 1920
His birth was to a Telugu family in Hadagali, Karnataka.
He finished his master degree in science in mathematics and an MA in statistics in 1943.
He did a PhD degree at King’s College at Cambridge University and added a DSc degree from Cambridge, in 1965.
C.R. Rao started his work at the Indian statistical institute and the anthropological museum in Cambridge.
Currently, he is working as a professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo.

International Prize in Statistics:
The International Prize in Statistics is presented to him recently and this prize is given in every two years.
The prize is also considered as the Nobel prizes, Abel Prize, Fields Medal and Turing Award.
Awards and honors:
- Rao has received many honours.
- Government of India gave him Padma Bhusan in 1968.
- He was honored by Government of India with India’s second highest Civilian award Padma Vibhusan in 2001.
- He received National Medal of Science for Mathematics and Computer Science in 2002 by US president George W.Bush.
- He got Samuel S. Wilks Memorial Award in 1988.
- Indian National Science Academy decorated him with Srinivasa Ramanujan Medal in 2003.
- He also received India Science Award which is the highest award in scientific field given by Government of India in 2010.
