India’s celebrating today (i.e.14 April) not one, but three festivals. These three festivals are Bihu, Baisakhi and Vishu which all ring in the spring harvest season. The festivals are being celebrated across the country with different traditions.

Every year Baisakhi, Vishu, and Bihu are celebrated in India usually on April 13 and April 14 based on the Hindu or Sikh calendars with full of joy and prosperity.


Baisakhi is harvesting festival of Punjab. The festival is more important for the Sikhs as it signs the beginning of the Sikh New Year. On this day, members of the Sikh community visit Gurudwaras, do kirtans and holds fairs.

Why Baisakhi celebrates?

Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of Sikhs, is considered to have asked people to follow Sikhism leading to the birth of the Khalsa community on this day in 1699.

The festival is celebrated with enthusiasm in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi with performance of bhangra and gidda on the beats of dhol.


Bihu which is also popular as Bohag Bihu. It is one of the significant festivals in Assam and it is also celebrated in several parts of Manipur and Bengal.

Types of Bihu:

There is three types of Bihu is celebrated by People of Assam – i) Bhogali Bihu in January, ii) Rongali Bihu in April, and iii) Kongali Bihu in October.

Why Bihu celebrates:

It is also the harvesting festival of the state that celebrates the changing of seasons. It is celebrated by the unique Bihu dance and enlarges dinners shared with families.


The festival of Vishu is celebrated mainly in Kerala which marks the New Year. The festival is also observed in some parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Pondicherry.

Why Vishu celebrates?

This is a welcoming of the first day of Medam. Medam is the ninth month in the solar calendar which ranges of rituals and customs widely to be observed on this day.

How it is celebrated?

For every Malayali, Vishu keeps a special place. The day begins with the Vishukkani. Vishukkani has the idols of Lord Krishna along with a platter of fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables.
