India’s first indigenous light combat helicopter

The first indigenously made light combat helicopter (LCH) has been inducted in the Indian Air Force (IAF) in an event in Jodhpur in presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari.

The Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) has been made to boost Indian Air Force’s combat prowess. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated in an event that it is a momentous occasion which reflecting India’s capability in defence production. These helicopters are multi-role platform and capable of firing a range of missiles and other weapons.

According to Ministry of Defence 10 helicopters will be given to the IAF and five will be for the Indian Army.

The Light Combat Helicopter (LCH):

The Light Combat Helicopter has been built or developed by state-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL).

In March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) given approval to the procurement of 15 indigenously developed Limited Series Production (LSP) LCH at a cost of ₹3,887 crore.

The aircraft is primarily designed for deployment in high-altitude regions.

The LCH is almost similar as Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv. Its built process has a number of stealth features, armoured-protection systems, night attack capability and crash-worthy landing gear for better survivability.

The LCH is outfitted with extended range, high altitude performance and all-weather combat capability to perform a range of roles including combat search and rescue (CSAR), destruction of enemy air defence (DEAD) and counter-insurgency (CI) operations.

The helicopter has specialty to be deployed in high-altitude bunker-busting operations, counter-insurgency operations in the jungles and urban environments as well as for supporting ground forces.

The helicopter can also be utilized against slow-moving aircraft and remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs) of adversaries.

Some aviation technologies like a glass cockpit and composite airframe structure is indigenized into the LCH.
