India’s First Make-in-India Hydrogen Plant Launched in Kandla

India’s First Make-in-India Hydrogen Plant Launched in Kandla

  • Kandla Inaugurated – India’s first green hydrogen plant made fully in India was opened at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat on 31 July 2025. It has a power capacity of 1 megawatt (MW).
  • Domestic Execution – This plant was made completely using Indian technology by L&T. It was finished quickly in just four months.
  • Phase One Launch – This 1 MW plant is the first phase of a larger 10 MW project, which was started with a foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Modi in May 2025.
  • Annual Output – The plant will make around 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen every year.
  • Initial Use – In the first stage, the hydrogen will be used to run 11 buses and also to power the lights at the port.
  • Port Innovation – Deendayal Port is now the first port in the country to start using hydrogen to run tugs (small boats), buses, and other work at the port.

Ministerial Praise and National Vision

  • Fast-Track Success – Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said this project shows India’s strength in working fast, doing big things, and using local skills. It fits well with the Maritime India Vision 2030.
  • Electric Tug Link – This new plant follows another big success—when the port earlier launched India’s first locally made electric green tug.
  • Gujarat’s Achievement – Minister of State Thakur said this is a moment of pride for Gujarat and an important move for India towards clean energy.

National Hydrogen Strategy Accelerates

  • Mission Goal – India aims to make 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen each year by 2030.
  • SIGHT Incentives – The National Green Hydrogen Mission is giving special financial support and rules to help companies set up green hydrogen projects.
  • Electrolyser Boom – India is working to build 15,000 MW worth of hydrogen-making machines (electrolysers) by 2026. This will need an investment of ₹45,000 crore.
  • Adani Pilot – In June 2025, Adani started a 5 MW green hydrogen plant in Kutch that runs on solar power and batteries, without using any electricity from outside.
  • JV Projects – BPCL and Sembcorp have teamed up to build big plants that make hydrogen and ammonia in Odisha and other parts of India.
  • Himachal Project – In Solan, Himachal Pradesh, a new project worth ₹1,400 crore is being planned. It will make hydrogen, ethanol, and APIs (used in medicines), with a power output of 30–50 MW.

Why Kandla Leads the Future

  • Indigenous Tech – This is the first large green hydrogen plant in India that uses only Indian-made technology to make hydrogen.
  • Rapid Buildout – It was completed and started working in just four months, making it the fastest green hydrogen plant built in India so far.
  • Operational Blueprint – The plant is already being used in real work at the port. It helps run buses, light up the area, and support boat operations.
  • Scalable Design – This plant will soon grow to 10 MW. The way it’s built can also be copied in other ports and factories across the country.

Important Questions

  1. Where has India set up its first green hydrogen plant made completely with Indian technology?
  2. Which company built the green hydrogen plant at Kandla using only Indian-made technology?
  3. What is the full planned capacity of the green hydrogen plant being built at Kandla Port?
  4. In what ways will the green hydrogen be used at Kandla Port once the plant is running?
  5. How does the green hydrogen plant in Kandla help India move forward with its clean energy goals?

Conclusion

India’s first 1 MW green hydrogen plant made fully in the country at Kandla is a big step toward clean energy and self-dependence. It was made quickly with Indian technology and shows a great example that other ports and industries in India can follow. It fits perfectly with the country’s dream of becoming a leader in green hydrogen and cutting down pollution.
