International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day is celebrated on February 21 every year. It has been intended by the United Nations to distinguish that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion and the Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind.
History of INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY:
Bangladesh initiated for setting up the International Mother Language Day which was finalized at the 1999 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) General Conference. It has been celebrated ever since annually. The first International Mother Language Day was observed in 2000 globally.
Importance of INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY:
The day intends the belief of UNESCO like organisation about its importance of cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies.
Linguistic diversity is intensifying coming under threat as more and more languages disappear.
As per the report released by United Nations it is indicated that globally 40 percent of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand.
Theme for 2022 year:
The theme of the 2022 International Mother Language Day is: ‘Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities’.
The UN said in its official statement that this year’s theme is made for accelerating the potential role of technology to advance multilingual education and support the development of quality teaching and learning for all.
On the base of experiences earned amid COVID-19 the field of education indicated how technology is crucial for distance learning. The UN emphasizes that technology demonstrated its potential to address some of the greatest challenges in education.
