The Origin and Global Recognition

The idea of an International Yoga Day was proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. The proposal received overwhelming support, and June 21 — the summer solstice and the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere — was chosen to mark the day. Since then, Yoga Day has been celebrated annually by people from over 190 countries.

Why June 21st?

June 21 is not just the longest day but also spiritually significant in yogic tradition. It marks the beginning of Dakshinayana — the southern journey of the sun — and is considered the time when Lord Shiva, the first yogi or Adiyogi, began imparting yoga knowledge to his disciples, the Saptarishis.
