  1. Parachute Deployment and Recovery System

  • Parachute Sequence: The Gaganyaan capsule uses a planned sequence of ten parachutes that are divided into four different groups.
  • Initial Deployment: The landing process starts with apex cover separation parachutes, which begin the parachute opening sequence.
  • Drogue Function: After that, drogue parachutes open to make the capsule stable and slow down its speed while it moves through the atmosphere.

  • Safe Splashdown: These main parachutes reduce the speed of the capsule enough to allow it to land safely in the sea.
  • Recent Testing: ISRO recently completed the fifth Integrated Main Parachute Airdrop Test, also called IMAT-05, to check whether the main parachutes can handle the highest expected loads during the mission.
  • Built-in Redundancy: The parachute system has backup arrangements that can still help the capsule land safely even if one of the main parachutes does not open properly.

  • Preparation Pace: ISRO has increased the speed of preparations for the Gaganyaan mission during the past year.
