Justice Uday Umesh Lalit Appointed 49th CJI
After the superannuation of former Chief Justice of India Shri Justice N.V. Raman, judge of the supreme court Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will be appointed the next 49th Chief Justice of India. The president of India, Droupadi Murmu, has signed the warrant of appointment of Justice Uday Umesh Lalit on wednesday.
Background:
He was born on 9th November,1957. His birth place was at Solapur, Maharashtra. He started his career in the field of law by enrolling as an advocate of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa. He also practiced in Bombay and Delhi High Court.
The Supreme Court judge, Shri Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will take charge as the CJI of India on August 27, 2022. The superannuation of Justice N.V. Raman will be held on 26 th August 2022. Justice Lalit will become the 49th Chief Justice of India.
2nd CJI who was directly elevated by top branch:
Justice Lalit was appointed by the top court branch from the bar in a direct elevation method. He has become the second CJI who was appointed directly by the top branch of court. In 1964 , Justice S.M. Skiri was the first CJI who was selected through this process.
Justice Lalit will be retired on 8 November 2022 thus he will have only 3 months of tenure with the effect from 27th August 2022. He will take the oath on this day.
Article 124
According to clause 2 of article 124 of the constitution the appointment of Chief Justice of India is done by the president of India by signing the warrant of his appointment. By the exercise of this article, the president of India, Droupadi Murmu, has appointed Justice Lalit 49th CJI with the effect from 27th August 2022.
Landmark judgements
The judge of supreme court, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is well known for his landmark judgements in history. He was also one of judges of the bench who dealt with the triple talaq the practice of divorce which was privileged among Muslim communities. This practice of getting divorce was illegal and unconstitutional. Justice Lalit with other judges of the bench held practice by claiming this triple talaq was illegal and it was violating the human rights which are conferred with the Indian constitution.
Before beginning his career as a supreme court judge, he also provided his service as a special public prosecutor for the CBI in the 2G spectrum case and conducted trials.
