India created a history by winning over Pakistan in the Kargil war in 1999 on July 26. India commemorates this day every year and also pays rich tribute to jawans who had given their lives for the country.

A wreath laying ceremony was held at Kargil War Memorial in Drass (in Jammu and Kashmir) to pay tribute to soldiers who gave their lives to country in Kargil War.

Operation Vijay:

The Indian armed forces had defeated Pakistan army after recapturing the mountain heights which occupied by them on 26 July 1999.

This Memorial Day (26 July) is known as the ‘Kargil War’ day.

Indian army named its resurgent operation as ‘Operation Vijay’. Indian army fought between 8th May to 26th July to victory over Indian territories which occupied by Pakistan army.

Operation Safed Sagar:

The squadron was creditworthy for the command of Rafale fighter jets at Ambala airbase. In the Kargil war, the golden arrows acted as a leading role in Operation Safed Sagar.

Operation Safed Sagar was the first large-scale usage of Airpower in the Jammu and Kashmir region since the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

India never forgot the Ambala-based ‘Golden Arrows’ squadron that proved to be significant to take the victory.

Golden Arrows:

The Golden arrows tackled many significant operations in Indian history. Some most important operations are the Goa Liberation war in 1961, the India-Pakistan war in 1965, the Battle of Longewala in 1971 and most notably the Kargil war.

The ‘Golden Arrows’ 17 Squadron had been commanded by Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa during the Kargil war in 1999.

A musical show titled “Ek Sham Sahidon ke Naam” has been performed by several bands in Drass town of Jammu & Kashmir to pay tribute to Kargil war heroes.
