Maratha Military Landscapes of India : India’s nomination in UNESCO world heritage list 2024-25
Represented by an extraordinary military system initiated by Maratha rulers and developed between the 17th and 19th century, Maratha Military Landscapes of India, will be the nomination for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) world heritage list dedicated to 2024-25 from India.
Components of Maratha Military Landscapes:
There are twelve components of Maratha Military Landscapes of India including Salher fort, Shivneri fort, Lohagad, Khanderi fort, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala Fort, Vijay durg, Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu.
These components are situated in various corners of the country showcasing the strategic military power of Maratha rulers in diverse geographic and physiographic regions around the country.
The Maratha Military Landscapes of India consist of forts making it a network of remarkable forts diversifying in scale, hierarchies and topological features. This network of remarkable forts is a result of maratha rulers efforts to integrate the landscape, terrains and psychographic characteristics of various parts of the country including Sahyadri mountain ranges, the Konkan Coast, Deccan Plateau and the Eastern Ghats in the Indian Peninsula.
Number of forts:
If we talk about the numbers, there are around 12 forts, namely Shivneri fort, Lohagad, Raigad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala fort, Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg and Gingee fort whereas Salher fort, Rajgad, Khanderi fort and Pratapgarhamong more than 390 forts that have been selected from Maharashtra to be included in Maratha Military Landscapes of India. Moreover these twelve forts come under the supervision of Archaeological survey of india.
The commencement of Maratha Military Landscapes of India started in the 17th century when the Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ruled. This inception of Maratha Military Landscapes of India continued till 1818 CE when the subsequent rulers Peshwas ruled in various parts of india.
There are two categories for nominations in the UNESCO world heritage list. The first one is cultural criteria and second one is natural criteria. The Maratha Military Landscapes of India come under culture criteria.
Contribution of Maharashtra in world heritage sites:
According to the current scenario, India has 42 world heritage sites in which 34 are cultural heritage sites, 7 are natural heritage sites and there is one which is a mixed site. If we talked about Maharashtra state, there are six world heritage sites including five cultural and one natural, namely Ajanta Caves (1983), Ellora Caves (1983), Elephanta Caves (1987), Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) (2004), Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai (2018) and western Ghats of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala is serial property in natural category (2012).
Conclusion:
The Maratha Military Landscapes of India hold significant cultural strength and power. This becomes the sixth nominated cultural heritage site for the inclusion of a world heritage list from Maharashtra.
