New Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation UAN Rules and Step by Step Process for Face Authentication

  • Mandatory from August: From 1 August 2025, you must use the UMANG app and do face scan through Aadhaar to create or activate your Universal Account Number (UAN).
  • Objective of Shift: This is done to make the process easier, safer, and possible without needing help from your employer.

Key Face Authentication Technology Services

  • New UAN Creation: If you don’t have a UAN, you can make one yourself through face scan using Aadhaar on UMANG.
  • Existing UAN Activation: If your UAN was given but never activated, you can now activate it yourself without your company’s help.
  • UAN Re-verification: If your UAN is already active, you can still use face scan to update your photo and address from Aadhaar.

Exempted User Groups

  • International Workers: People working in India but from another country can still get UAN through their employer.
  • Nepal & Bhutan Nationals: People from Nepal or Bhutan don’t have to use the face scan system because of special rules.

Generate UAN via UMANG

  • App Installation: You must download two apps — the UMANG app and the Aadhaar Face RD app — to start the process.
  • Start Process: Open UMANG, go to EPFO section, and select “UAN Allotment and Activation”.
  • Enter Aadhaar Details: Enter your Aadhaar number and your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, then enter the OTP you get on your phone.
  • Face Verification: The app will ask to scan your face using your phone’s camera, which is checked with Aadhaar.
  • UAN Allotted: If Aadhaar is not linked to any UAN, you’ll get a new UAN by SMS. If it is already linked, your UAN will be shown.

Activate Existing UAN

  • Select Option: In UMANG, choose the “UAN Activation” option under EPFO services.
  • Provide Details: Enter your UAN number, Aadhaar number, and the mobile number linked with Aadhaar.
  • Authenticate Face: The app will ask to scan your face again for verification through Aadhaar’s face scan system.
  • Temporary Password Sent: Once verified, a temporary password is sent to your phone to log in and complete activation.
  • Profile Auto-Updated: Your EPFO account will now have your Aadhaar photo and address updated automatically.

Face Auth for Verified UAN

  • Choose Face Auth: If your UAN is already active, choose the option “Face Authentication of Activated UAN” in UMANG.
  • Scan Your Face: Give permission and then scan your face using the camera, which matches your face with Aadhaar.
  • Data Synced: After successful scan, your Aadhaar details are copied to your EPF account without needing to upload anything.

New System Benefits

  • No Employer Needed: You don’t need your company’s help anymore to get or activate your UAN.
  • Fast and Secure: The process is quick, safe, and accurate since it matches with Aadhaar directly.
  • Full Self-Service: You can do everything by yourself — like checking passbook, updating KYC, downloading UAN card, and more.

Other 2025 EPFO Changes

  • Updated Form 13: EPFO made changes to the form used for transferring PF accounts from one job to another to make it simpler.
  • Bulk UAN Option: In special cases, companies can apply for many Universal Account Numbers (UANs) at once even if Aadhaar is not available.
  • Less Documentation: You no longer need to upload bank passbooks or cancelled cheques to link your bank account. Also, your employer’s approval is not always required now.
  • Instant Withdrawals: EPFO will soon allow you to take out money using UPI or ATMs starting from June 2025.
