Introduction:
NITI Aayog has released its first ever Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Urban India Index. In which around 56 urban areas have been evaluated with 77 SDG indicators across 46 targets.
Ranking:
Top 10 performing urban areas: Shimla, Coimbatore, Chandigarh and Thiruvananthapuram are among the top 10 performing urban areas in the first Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Urban India Index released by NITI Aayog.
Bottom 10 performing urban areas: Dhanbad, Meerut, Faridabad and Patna are among the bottom 10 performers in the first Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Urban India Index released by NITI Aayog.
Ranking 56 urban areas on 77 SDG indicators across 46 targets, the index is focused on driving SDG localization in urban areas in which 44 are with population of above 1 million, 12 are state capitals with a population of less than a million.
Indicators used in index:
Urban areas have been ranked on various indicators such as zero hunger, no poverty, good health, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, good jobs and economic growth are among the goals on which. The index and dashboard will give more strength to SDG localization and institute for robust SDG monitoring in urban areas. It indicates the strengths and gaps of urban local body level data, monitoring, and reporting systems.
NITI Aayog’s Vice Chairman, Mr. Rajiv Kumar said that cities are becoming engines of growth more quickly. The SDG Urban Index and dashboard, a product of innovative partnership between the NITI Aayog and GIZ, will go a long way in instituting a strong SDG monitoring system at the city level, and it will be proved a milestone step in our SDG localization journey.
Shimla, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Panaji, Pune, Tiruchirappalli, Ahmedabad and Nagpur are the top 10 urban areas in SDG Urban Index and Dashboard 2021-22. Dhanbad, Meerut, Itanagar, Guwahati, Patna, Jodhpur, Kohima, Agra, Kolkata and Faridabad are the bottom 10 urban areas in SDG Urban Index and Dashboard 2021-22.
The SDG Urban index and a dashboard 2021-22 have been developed by NITI Aayog together with GIZ and BMZ under the Indo-German Development Cooperation.
