In Bhuj, Gujarat Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Smriti Van memorial which observes the resilience shown by people during the devastating 2001 earthquake in the Kutch region of Gujarat.

The inauguration of Smriti Van is a tribute to the lost lives and the remarkable fighting spirit of the people of Kutch.

India’s first memorial:

The grand structure of the memorial is the first kind of such earthquake memorial in the country which is spread over 470 acres on Bhujio Hill near Bhuj town.

It observes the spirit of resilience due to the death of nearly 13,000 people during the earthquake on January 26, 2001, which had its epicenter in Bhuj.

This project has special effects of experience that has a special theatre where visitors will be able to experience an earthquake through vibration and sound effects.

The memorial holds names of the people who lost their lives during the earthquake. It also has a state-of-the-art Smriti Van Earthquake Museum.

The memorial has a block to imagine and experience of an earthquake with the help of a 5D simulator and another block for people to pay homage to the lost souls.

Inauguration event:

PM Modi has dedicated the first phase of the project on his two-day Gujarat visit.

At the inauguration Narendra Modi has been accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and both were took a stroll inside the museum premises where officials and tour guides informed them about its various aspects.

Remarkably, PM Modi has the idea of setting up such a memorial when he was the chief minister of Gujarat.

The museum showcases Gujarat’s conformation which is rebuilding initiatives and success stories after the 2001 earthquake. Even it informs about different kinds of disasters and future readiness for any type of disaster.

Earthquake and Bhuj:

The epicenter of the 2001 earthquake was near Chobari village of Bhachau taluka at Bhuj in Gujarat.

Bhujio Hill was used to be a military base for former rulers of the Kutch region. It has a 300-year-old fort which is also repaired and restored under this project now.
