Sri Lanka announced visa-free entry for Indians

The visa-free entry has been announced for Indian tourists by the Government of Sri Lanka under a pilot project. The visa-free entry for Indians will be made effective immediately until March 21, 2024.

With India there are six other countries which have been added in the list of visa-free entry i.e. China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand.

Why Sri Lanka take this step?

The economy of Sri Lanka is heavily depends on inbound tourism. India is accounting for the majority of tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka.

With this decision, the country is expected to give a major boost for the crisis-hit island which has been battling persisting high inflation, unemployment and deteriorating economy post the Covid pandemic.

This decision might attract more tourists to the island nation.

Sri Lanka is expecting to increase tourist arrivals to five million over the coming years.

Changing scenarios:

Due with the data of September, India topped with more than 30,000 arrivals which comprising 26 per cent of the total.

Chinese tourists’ feet are the second-largest with over 8,000 arrivals.

E-ticketing system:

The Cabinet has also put a proposal of e-ticketing system for most of the tourist sites in Sri Lanka in the near future.

Benefits:

This recent free visas and e-ticketing system will save money and time spent on obtaining visas.

Sri Lanka is looking at forging a closer relationship with India while adding they are trying for electricity, renewable energy, tourism and port shipping connectivity.

Data about recent tourism boom:

There is recent hike in tourism arrived in Sri Lanka. This hike is due to the hosting the final round of the Miss World pageant.

This recent steps to boost tourism will be benefited at the end of the year as Sri Lanka is going to host the World Travel Awards (WTA). This event will see the participation of around 117 countries.
