State of World Population Report 2024: UNFPA

The United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) has recently released the State of World Population – 2024 report -“Interwoven Lives, Threads of Hope: Ending Inequalities in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights”.

According to this report, India’s population is going to increase and double in 77 years. India remains the most populous country around the world having 144.17 crore population. India is followed by China with 142.5 crore population.

As per the last Census Data in 2011, India’s population was recorded at 121 crore.

More findings:

• As per the report the age group between 0-14 years is estimated to constitute 24% of India’s population and 17% of population is within the 10-19 age group, furthur 10-24 age group is 26%, 15-64 age group is 68%, and around 7% of India’s population is within the 65 years and above age group.
• The child marriages percentage in India was at 23% from 2006 to 2023.
• The rate of maternal deaths in India has witnessed drastic fall Accounting for only 8% worldwide.
• The main reasons behind the improved condition in India are improved access to affordable health care services, efforts to eliminate gender discrimination in the health sector.
• Still the Inequalities in maternal death risk persist.
• According to the report, women with disabilities are 10 times more likely to face domestic violence and face gender based violence.
• The most vulnerable communities contain Women and girls with disabilities, migrants and refugees, ethnic minorities, LGBTQIA+ people, people living with HIV and disadvantaged castes.
• Climate change, Humanitarian crisis and mass migration also intensify the vulnerabilities.

Conclusion:

Despite the resilient growth in the economy, India Still needs to improve the healthcare services and needs to make efforts to the overall betterment of the society.
