SWATI- An online portal representing Indian women and girls in STEMM was launched

Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India Prof Ajay Kumar Sood has launched a single window online portal ,repressing Indian women and girls in the field of STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Medicine), named SWATI-Science for Women-A Technology & Innovation.

The SWATI portal has been launched on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science at Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi. The SWATI portal will address the challenges of gender gap in policy making.

More about SWATI portal:

The SWATI portal is developed by the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR), New Delhi under the leadership of Dr. Subhra Chakraborty, Director, NIPGR, New Delhi. This SWATI portal is first of its kind a complete interactive database in India. As per the official announcement,this is probably the world ‘s first interactive portal of its kind.

The object of the SWATI portal is to have data of all women scientists across the country. The main motive behind the event was to focus on the importance of “Science for Women & Women in Science” as well as to highlight the emerging opportunities for women in the Science and technology field.

Significance:

The SWATI portal will be beneficial towards the distribution of knowledge, New Advances in fundamental Science and encourage innovation and Entrepreneurships to achieve the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. This would also be helpful for making policies and a roadmap for ‘Women in Science’ & ‘Science for Women’.

The SWATI portal has some other important objectives such as to make efforts to include each and every woman in Science irrespective of career stages and subjects. This would promote the idea of equality, diversity and inclusivity in India.

Different sections in SWATI portal:

There are various sections in the SWATI portal such as Icons – Awardees (Padma / Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar / Stree Shakti Science Samman) & Directors, Secretaries Academy Presidents; Faculty- Indian Universities, Autonomous organizations including S&T Ministry/ CSIR/ DBT/ DST/ CSIR/ MHRD/ UGC/ GATI/ KIRAN, Research fellows- Postdocs, JRFs, SRFs, technical Staff; Students-PhD Scholars, Research Interns, Graduates, Post graduates, Undergraduates; WiS Entrepreneurs, Startups, Business & Science Administrators; STEMM background professionals and many more. If we talk about the current situation, 3000 ‘WiS Data Cards’ have been developed.

Conclusion:

The women contribute 50% in the total human resources and their contribution is mandatory to achieve the heights of development and growth. Without encouraging women in the field of science and technology we can’t expect a healthy and vibrant society. The SWATI portal is a step towards harnessing equality and demolishing the gender gap in the country.
