The first Global Indian award recipient: Sudha Murty

Renowned author and philanthropist Sudha Murty has been honored with the Global Indian Award by the Canada India Foundation. The Global Indian Award is established to give annually to prominent Indians who have excelled in their respective fields. The worth of the Global Indian Awards is $50,000.

Award ceremony:

The first Global Indian awards conferred to Sudha Murty by the Canada India Foundation at the Toronto gala event. She attended the event by the parents of her son-in-law and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Sudha Murty graced her feelings for the recognition and commended the Indo-Canadian diaspora for bridging the cultural gap between the two countries.

She also humorously mentioned that both she and her husband had received the same award in different years and making them the first couple to achieve this distinction.

Donation of award money:

The awards money has been donated generously by Sudha Murty to the field institute at the University of Toronto which is known for its contributions to mathematics and various other disciplines.

About Sudha Murty:

Born: 19^th August 1950

She is an educator and philanthropist and serves as the chairperson of the Infosys foundation. She is the wife of Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murty.

She is a member of the public health care initiatives of the Gates Foundation.

Education: B.Eng. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering

Eng. in Computer science from IISc.

Philanthropic activities:

Sudha Murty founded Infosys Foundation as a public charitable trust in 1996.

She is the founder of several orphanages. She has participated in rural development efforts.

She established Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University.

Awards & Honors:

Sudha Murty was conferred with India’s fourth highest civilian award Padma Shri by Government of India in 2006.
She received her Honorary Degree (Honoris Causa) of Doctor of Science in 2009 from IIT Kanpur.
She was honored with India’s Third highest civilian awards Padma Bhusan in 2023.
Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar has also been given to the Sudha Murty in 2023.
