♦ Sri Lanka to seek Chinese help to probe ‘assassination plot’
- Sri Lankan authorities will seek Chinese assistance to tap evidence pertaining to an “assassination plot” said to be targeting President Maithripala Sirisena.
- On Tuesday, Sri Lankan police won permission from a magistrate court here to approach Chinese multinational Huawei for technical expertise to recover data from a phone manufacture by it.
- The phone belongs to Namal Kumara, a police informant, who in September claimed to be aware of an assassination plot aimed at President Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
♦ Canadian rapper dies after falling from plane
- Canadian rapper Jon James McMurray has died after a plane stunt went wrong.
- James, 33, was performing a stunt, which involved him walking on the wing of a plane while rapping.
♦ Ritu Malik misses out
- Ritu Malik’s efforts fell short in the 65kg category bronze medal playoff as the Indian went down to Ayana Gempei of Japan 73 in the World wrestling championship .
- Ritu had overpowered Bulgaria’s Sofiya Hristova Georgieva 98 in the re pechage round to enter the bronze playoff.
♦ Bharti Infratel Q2 netslides 6% to Rs600 cr
- Bharti Infratel on Wednesday posted a decline of 6% in net profit to Rs 8 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, 2018. The net profit stood at Rs 638.4 crore in the JulySeptember 2017 quarter.
- The consolidated revenue saw a marginal increaseof 1% to Rs 8 crore as against Rs 364.8 crore in the yearago period.
- The board of directors has declared an interim dividend of Rs 50 per equity share of face value Rs 10 each for financial year 2018 19.
♦ Zydus to acquire Heinz India
- Zydus Wellness Ltd., which is into consumer healthcare, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Heinz India Private Limited, the subsidiary of Kraft Heinz, jointly with Cadila Healthcare Ltd., at a valuation of Rs 4,595 crore.
- This valuation includes net working capital of 40 crore, cash of Rs.15 crore and assumes no debt. The transaction is expected to close in Q4 FY19, subject to regulatory approvals.
- Heinz India’s business comprises brands such as Complan, Glucon D, Nycil and Sampriti Ghee.
♦ Punjab government bans sale of herbicide
- The Punjab government has banned the sale of glyphosate, a herbicide which is extensively used in the State to control a wide variety of weeds in almost all the crops.
- “This chemical has been observed to be a Group 2A cancercausing material. Besides cancer, this chemical is also known for causing other health problems and has the potential to damage human DNA as per the opinion of experts from PGIM-ER, Chandigarh,”
- Glyphosate is sold in the country under various trade names such as Roundup,Excell, Glycel, Glider, Glydon, etc. The Punjab State Farmers Commission had also recommended a ban on the sale of the chemical in Punjab.
♦ Bilateral Defence Minister’s Dialogue between India and Indonesia was concluded in Jakarta
- This meeting between Raksha Mantri Nirmala Sitharaman and her Indonesian counterpart Gen (Retd) Ryamizard Rycudu comes after both the countries have upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership andhave recently concluded a new Defence Cooperation Agreement in May 2018.

♦ RBI may make some changes in PCA norms
- The Reserve Bank may make some changes in the Prompt Corrective Action
(PCA) framework that put restrictions on financially weak banks.
- PSBs wanted relaxation of guidelines.
- The changes could be made in the next few weeks after taking into account various aspects and in the larger interest of the banking system, sources said,adding that the recent RBI board meeting had a discussion on the issue.
- However, RBI Deputy Governor Viral V. Acharya said earlier this month that imposition of the PCA was essential for the revival of financially weak banks and deepening reforms in the banking space.
♦ Centre sets up GoM on sexual harassment
- The Centre on Wednesday established a Group of Ministers to recommend measures to effectively implement the law against sexual harassment at the workplace and to strengthen the legal and institutional framework in response to the #MeToo campaign.
- Home Minister Rajnath Singh will head the GoM, which includes Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi.
- The GoM will come up with a comprehensive plan within three months and de vise ways to ensure its time-bound implementation.
♦ Nageswara Rao to head agency; Verma, Asthana sent on leave
- In an overnight operation,CBI Director Alok Verma and his deputy, Special Director Rakesh Asthana, were dramatically divested of their powers and Joint Director
- Nageswara Rao was given interim charge of the premier investigating agency.
