White paper on economy: A political diversion

  • The finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has presented a white paper document on the economy accusing Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) of 2004-2014 of carelessly carrying out the economy.
  • In the white paper, the finance Ministry has praised the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and provided credit to them for reforms that made the country fifth largest economy and repaired the economy from the ‘fragile five’ state 10 years ago.
  • The white paper also mentioned the top 15 high profile UPA scams like coal, 2G spectrum, the Commonwealth Games and even a ₹44 crore misappropriation case in the Jammu & Kashmir cricket board and others.
  • A few hours before the white paper presented in the parliament, Congress also released a black paper highlighting the NDA government’s economic blunders.
  • The black paper released by Congress mention the 10 years of NDA government as the years of injustice and also listed some economic blunders of NDA government such as demonetisation, the flaws in GST regime, the unemployment situation across the country with stagnant wage growth, farmers’ distress, and high inflation situation and other persisting issues.
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also questioned the pending reforms after the 1991 liberalization.
  • The white paper presented by the government is an effort for India’s Youth to know the damage led by the UPA government 10 years ago but it seems that this white paper is more about the anxiety that the Youth of India may not be satisfied with recent years outcomes during the NDA government.
  • The white paper seems as an effort to catch Voters attention in the process of getting majority mandate in the upcoming Elections.
