Data for better education

  • The Annual Status of Education Report(ASER) was released in mid January 2024 and received much attention.
  • The ASER 2023 has data from around 28 rural districts across 26 states around the country.
  • Some data in this report are concerning. Around 26% of 14-18 year olds can not read a standard two level text in their regional language.
  • As per the comparison in data between ASER 2018 and ASER 2023, it is evident that if children are not able to acquire foundational skills in their primary grades, it becomes difficult to acquire them at their later grades.
  • According to the recent data around 57% of surveyed children who don’t have basic reading skills are studied in class 10th or below grade.
  • Around 28% of these children are not enrolled in any school, college or vocational institutions.
  • As per the National Sample Survey Office 75th round in 2017-18 attendance of students in the secondary grades in rural areas was low as 60%.
  • The problem further increases as these children need guidance, support, practice, encouragement and lots of motivation to read and when in absence of these factors children face embarrassment, ridicule and some are given up and eventually hate reading.
  • To improve the situation of these children one thing is more important which is the availability of reading materials and books.
  • Community libraries can perform well to improve the situation but only setting up libraries is not the solution, proper management, led by enterprising individuals who have interest in reading can do better.
  • As per the report around 60% of surveyed children want to join college for further studies and the number of girls is higher than the boys who want to enroll in colleges.
  • But in terms of career, army and defense was the first choice of many boys and teacher and doctor professions were prominent in girls.
  • The ASER report has significant importance and if the data is analyzed properly many problems can be highlighted and many actions of these problems can be found.
