• After the drug authority in the UK decided to approve Casgevy which is a gene therapy to treat Sickle Cell and beta thalassemia, the US has also approved two drugs to treat sickle cell disease.
• The USA approved two drugs Casgevy and Lyfgenia respectively to treat Sickle Cell Disease in those people who are above 12 years.
• The US decision to approve these drugs was expected to be announced by March 2024.
• Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder in which red blood cells break down and can’t contort into a Sickle shape.
• In beta thalassemia the body stops producing as much beta globin as it should. It is an inherited blood disorder.
• The approval of Casgevy and Lyfgenia came to mark the beginning of gene therapy to treat Sickle Cell and beta thalassemia.
• Under Gene Therapy, CRISPR-Cas9 tool is being used to treat diseases which otherwise would only be treated by bone marrow transplantation.
• On the other hand Lyfgenia drug uses the lentivirus which is disabled and acts as a vector to initiate new blood stem cells for hemoglobin which acts as a mimic of healthy versions of cells.
• As both drugs use the patient’s own blood cell to edit genes, there is a huge chance that by using these therapies the number of recoveries will be high.
• These two treatments don’t need or rely on matching bone marrow donors.
• There are some setbacks related to gene therapy such as these treatments are exorbitantly expensive and only certain and special hospitals have the right equipment to use the gene editing tools. That’s why the limitations of hospitals will make it difficult for needy patients to recover on time.
• The trails have started and there is a hope the results will be in our favor.
