  • The research and development ecosystem in India has witnessed significant growth in the funding as ₹6,01,968 million in 2010-11 and ₹12,73,810 million in 2020-21.
  • If we talk about the percentage of the investment in the research and development field out of the GDP, India lags behind many major developed and emerging economies like China, Germany, South Korea and the USA.
  • Despite having lower share of GDP, India has done great in the research and development ecosystem as India has produced potentially strong no of academic talents.
  • India’s research outputs ranks third globally with 3,00,000 publications in 2022.
  • If we measure the performance in patent grants,India secures sixth rank globally as 30,490 patents have been granted in 2022.
  • Even though these potential performances still India needs to increase its share of GDP in research and development ecosystem to empower the transformative shift in research and development field.
  • For this India needs to follow dual strategy- first is to encourage private sector involvement and second foster the academic research infrastructure.
  • The National Deep Tech Startup Policy is one of the examples of such initiatives India needs to take for the increasing the involvement of private sector in the research and development ecosystem in India.
