  • Large storms, lightning, and thunder caused major destruction in many districts during the last 36 hours. State Relief Commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod said that officials are continuously monitoring the situation.
  • According to the Relief Commissioner’s office, 111 deaths were reported from 26 districts of the State.
  • The statement also said that 72 people were injured.
  • About 170 animals also died because of the storm and rain.
  • Damage to 227 houses was also reported.
  • At least four people each died in the districts of Barabanki, Bahraich, Kanpur Dehat, Basti, Sambhal, Hardoi, and Unnao.
  • A shocking video from Bareilly district showed a man being lifted into the air during the strong storm on Wednesday.
  • The man was reportedly standing under a tin shed for safety when strong winds tore the shed apart.
  • Both the tin shed and the man were thrown several feet into the air before he fell back to the ground. He suffered only minor injuries.

  • Referring to the fact that lakhs of people were badly affected by the storms, Akhilesh Yadav, president of the Samajwadi Party, asked the government to provide full relief support.
  • In a post on X, he said that relief and rescue work should be carried out on a war footing.

Tense Calm in Beijing as Donald Trump and Xi Jinping Hold Talks on Trade and Taiwan

  • The United States and China appeared to reach a temporary and uneasy understanding on trade, Taiwan, and their growing rivalry during talks held in Beijing on Thursday.
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping told visiting U.S. President Donald Trump that relations between the two countries could turn into “clashes and conflicts” if the Taiwan issue was not handled carefully.
  • According to the Chinese statement after the meeting, Mr. Xi said that Taiwan is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations.
  • He warned that if the Taiwan issue was handled properly… relations… remain stable, but if handled badly, it could create conflicts and seriously damage the relationship.
  • China also repeated its opposition to U.S. weapons sales to Taiwan during the discussions.
  • The American statement released after the talks did not mention Taiwan at all.
  • However, later, S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters that America’s position on Taiwan had not changed.
  • The statements released by both countries suggested that each side mainly repeated its own stand on Taiwan, which continues to remain one of the biggest tension points between China and the United States.
  • The White House statement said that both leaders agreed on the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open so that energy supplies could move without interruption.
  • The statement also said that China clearly opposed the militarisation of the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Even after these discussions, there did not appear to be any larger agreement between the two countries on handling the Iran crisis.
  • The ceremonial welcome during the visit appeared bigger than the actual political outcomes of the talks.
  • Trump received a grand welcome in Beijing on Thursday morning. Marching PLA soldiers and cheering schoolchildren welcomed him at the Great Hall of the People.
  • Trump described the reception as “a magnificent welcome like none other”.
  • The two leaders spent several hours together. They first held delegation-level talks, after which Xi personally took Mr. Trump to visit the Temple of Heaven.
  • A state banquet was organised in the evening, and more talks over tea were planned for Friday at Zhongnanhai, the area where the Chinese leadership lives and works.
  • During the official talks, Mr. Xi called for “a new vision” for China-U.S. relations and described it as a “constructive relationship of strategic stability” that should continue for the next three years and beyond.
  • Officials said that the two leaders could meet three more times during the year.
  • Trump invited Mr. Xi to visit the United States on September 24, and Mr. Xi reportedly accepted the invitation in principle.
  • The two leaders may also meet during the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, which China is expected to host later this year, and also at the G20 Summit in Miami.
  • A bigger challenge for both countries is the changing balance of power as they try to manage their increasingly difficult relationship.
  • Cameron Johnson, former professor at New York University Shanghai and senior partner at a supply chain consulting company, said that the United States still thinks it is dealing with the China of ten years ago, while the real balance of power has changed greatly.
  • Both countries have continued taking retaliatory actions against each other in the ongoing trade and technology conflict.
  • For American companies, China’s restrictions on rare earth materials have become a major concern.
  • For China, American export controls, especially restrictions connected to semiconductors, continue to remain a serious issue.
  • Overall, the visit may only provide temporary relief from tensions between the two countries.

Election Commission of India to begin Phase 3 of SIR in 16 States and 3 Union Territories from May 30

  • The Election Commission of India (EC) on Thursday announced the schedule for Phase 3 of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which will start from May 30.
  • After the start of Phase 3, the SIR process will cover almost the entire country except Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
  • The EC said that the schedule for these remaining areas will be announced later after considering the completion of Phase 2 of the Census and weather conditions in snow-covered regions.
  • Phase 3 of the SIR will be carried out in a step-by-step manner in Delhi, Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Telangana, Punjab, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Tripura and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
  • The total voter population in these States and Union Territories is 36.73 crore.
  • The final voter lists for the States included in this phase will be released on different dates during the year.
  • The final electoral rolls for Odisha, Sikkim, Mizoram and Manipur will be published on September 6.
  • The final voter lists for Delhi, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Maharashtra and Jharkhand will be released on October 7.
  • The publication of final electoral rolls under Phase 3 will end with Tripura on December 23.
  • The SIR process has already been completed in Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep.
  • In Assam, a separate “special revision” was conducted because of legal issues related to the NRC.
  • Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar appealed to voters to actively take part in Phase 3 of the SIR and fill out their enumeration forms.
  • He said that the SIR exercise is being carried out to make sure that only eligible voters are included in the electoral rolls.
  • More than 94 lakh Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will go door-to-door during the enumeration process.
  • These BLOs will be helped by 42 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by political parties.
  • When Phase 2 of the SIR was announced on October 27 last year, the voter population across 12 States and Union Territories was more than 50.99 crore.
  • The voter population has now reduced to 45.81 crore, showing a fall of more than 5.18 crore voters, or around 10.2%.
  • The rules for Phase 3 of the SIR will remain the same as those used in Phase 2.
  • While announcing Phase 2 last year, the EC introduced some changes after learning from the first phase conducted in Bihar.
  • One major change was that voters would not need to submit documents during the enumeration process.
  • Aadhaar was added as the 12th accepted document after directions from the Supreme Court of India.
  • However, Aadhaar will only be accepted as proof of identity and not as proof of citizenship.
  • Fresh voter registrations were also carried out along with the house-to-house enumeration process.
