- If that numbers are accurate for the overall population then this represents a good rise in potable tap water accessibility and by this the government could achieve its aim by 2024.
- But the recent surveys which had shown big differences in the states.
- Tamilnadu,Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Puducherry reported that more than 80% of the households have their fully functional tap water connection.
- But states like Rajasthan, Manipur,Kerala, Maharashtra,Tripura, Mizoram,Madhya Pradesh and Sikkim had reported less than half percent of 80%.
- A recent survey by a private agency claimed that about 74% of households received water all days of the week and only 7% just once a week and the report also mentions a chlorine contamination problem
- 94% of water samples are bacteria free but most of the school and anganwadi centres had higher than than the permissible range of chlorine.
- The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted this scheme but with the time and the challenges of labour and materials is somewhere helping the scheme to achieve its goal.
- The centre and the state should work together to meet the objectives of the scheme and not only to meet election targets because it will help in the Nation’s progress.
