India, U.S. to Step Up Efforts for Early Trade Deal Conclusion
- India and the U.S. on Tuesday had good and hopeful talks about a planned trade deal, the Commerce and Industry Ministry said in its statement.
- Both countries agreed they must work harder and faster to finish a trade deal soon, which will be useful and fair for both nations.
- The U.S. group was led by Brendan Lynch, the main negotiator from the United States Trade Representative’s office, while India’s side was led by Rajesh Agrawal.
- Rajesh Agrawal, who is Special Secretary in the Department of Commerce, represented India in the talks, which went on for almost seven hours in total.
- The U.S. Embassy spokesperson said Mr. Lynch had a good meeting with Mr. Agrawal in Delhi, where they spoke about the next steps in trade talks.
- The Commerce Ministry underlined that trade with the U.S. is very important, and said the talks were positive and forward-looking, covering many parts of the deal.
- Both sides agreed to speed up their work to finish the trade deal soon, though they did not announce any dates for the next formal round.
- The sixth round of official talks, which was to be held in late August, was cancelled because tensions grew after the U.S. put fifty percent tariffs on India.
- On Monday, Mr. Agrawal explained that Tuesday’s meeting was not an official round of talks but only a meeting to decide how to continue the process.
- Ministry sources said that once the U.S. team goes back home, the trade talks will continue online, so that discussions do not stop despite earlier problems.
SC asks T.N. govt about 41 missing files in idol theft cases
- The Supreme Court asked the Tamil Nadu government about 41 missing files linked to idol theft cases. The court said it is the State’s responsibility to protect cultural and historical heritage.
- Justice R. Mahadevan and Justice B.V. Nagarathna were hearing petitions that said 376 idols were stolen. Many idols are now in other countries, but 41 important case files for recovery are missing.
- The Bench asked senior advocate Sanjay Hegde, who was assisted by Sabarish Subramanium, why the files had gone missing when details of the idols were available with the authorities.
- Hegde said some files were made again, but Justice Mahadevan warned the State that FIRs must be registered, otherwise the Chief Secretary would be called to court.
- Justice Nagarathna asked if the files were destroyed because of fires in 38 police stations at the same time, or if any official order was given to remove these sensitive documents.
- The case came from advocate Elephant Rajendran’s petition. He demanded a proper investigation into the missing files related to thefts of old temple idols, jewels, artefacts, and cultural properties.
- Rajendran said the missing files could be part of a conspiracy involving senior police officers, government officials, and idol smuggling gangs who want to hide evidence and protect the real criminals.
- Some of the idols were 1,500–2,000 years old, making the thefts very serious. Hegde also informed that 11 FIRs have been filed for the missing files and some idols have been recovered.
