Pakistani Corvette Collides With Indian Warship After an ‘Unsafe Approach’

  • A Pakistan Navy corvette collided with a frontline Indian Navy warship in the North Arabian Sea on Tuesday evening after coming towards it at high speed and moving in an “unsafe and unprofessional” way.
  • The incident happened in international waters, while the Indian Navy warship was carrying out a regular surveillance mission.
  • The Pakistani ship, PNS Hunain (F-273), came close to the Indian warship while trying to intercept it or follow it.
  • Because of the ships’ movement at such a close distance, the two vessels grazed against each other, causing a collision.
  • PNS Hunain was damaged in the collision and went back to the harbour. The Indian Navy ship suffered only minor damage and continued with its mission.
  • No one was injured or killed, and there was no major damage to either vessel.
  • India called Pakistan’s Chargé d’Affaires to the Ministry of External Affairs and lodged a strong diplomatic protest against what it called the unacceptable and unprofessional behaviour of Pakistani naval units that caused the collision.
  • India said that although the incident happened in international waters and did not cause any major damage, the actions of the Pakistani naval ship were directly against Article 10 of the April 1991 Agreement between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troops Movements.
  • The Pakistani diplomat was asked to inform the authorities in Pakistan that all military units must act carefully at sea and follow the rules of the relevant agreements between the two countries so that such incidents do not happen again.
  • India also instructed its Chargé d’Affaires in Islamabad to lodge a similar protest with Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Pakistan later summoned the Indian Chargé d’Affaires in Islamabad and strongly protested against what it called a “highly provocative and unacceptable” action by an Indian Navy vessel in Pakistan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
  • PNS Hunain is a Yarmook-class offshore patrol vessel. It was built by Damen Shipyards in Romania and was officially added to the Pakistan Navy in July 2024.
  • The incident happened at a time when both Indian and Pakistani naval ships continued to be deployed in the Arabian Sea.
  • The exact reason and circumstances behind the close movement of the two ships and the collision are likely to be examined by both India and Pakistan through the proper official channels.

EPFO Wage Ceiling Increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per Month

  • The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved increasing the wage limit for mandatory coverage under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this while briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting.
  • The new wage limit will be effective from September 17, which is also Vishwakarma Jayanti.
  • Employers’ organisations welcomed the decision and asked the Central Government to help them in putting it into practice. However, trade unions called the increase “too little and too late.”
  • According to a press release issued by the Union Government, this decision is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under compulsory EPFO coverage.
  • The decision will give more workers access to provident fund savings, pension benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and insurance protection under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI).
  • The government’s yearly spending because of this decision is expected to be around ₹11,339 crore, compared with the present yearly budget support of about ₹10,250 crore.
  • The amount contributed by both employees and employers towards the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) will also increase because of the new wage limit.
  • Later, Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said at his official residence that, according to a government survey, the average salary in private establishments is ₹23,000 per month.
  • Mandaviya said that more workers will now get the benefits of pension, insurance in case of death and better interest on their savings as EPFO coverage increases.
  • He said that the employer’s contribution will increase by ₹600 per employee. The employee’s contribution towards EPS will also increase from the present ₹1,250 to about ₹2,082.5 per month, which is 33% of the new ₹25,000 wage limit.
  • He added that between 51 lakh and up to one crore workers may benefit from this decision.
  • Amarjeet Kaur, General Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), called the decision “too little and too late.”
  • She said that the wage limit was last increased in 2014 and, keeping in mind the rise in prices and inflation, it should have been increased to at least ₹30,000.
  • She also said that employees may see a decrease in their take-home salary, because their contribution towards the provident fund and pension may increase.
  • Kaur said that the government should make sure that employers pay their share clearly and honestly, instead of adding it to the company’s costs and then putting the burden on employees.
  • E. Raghunathan, National Chairman of the Association of Indian Entrepreneurs (AIE), said that the EPFO software should be improved and upgraded so that it can handle the large increase in the number of subscribers.
  • He said that employers, especially Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), would find it very difficult to bear the extra financial burden because many of them are already struggling to make profits.
  • He warned that this extra burden should not make employers avoid formal employment and instead move towards gig-working arrangements.
  • Raghunathan suggested that the Government of India should bear this additional cost for two years for MSMEs.
  • Suchita Dutta, Executive Director of the Indian Staffing Federation, said that the decision is a structural gain for formalisation, meaning it can help bring more workers into the formal employment system.

  • According to a statement from the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee recommended Anant Nag for the award. The Government of India announced that he would receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2024 for his contribution to Indian cinema and his great journey in films that has inspired many generations.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Anant Nag and praised him for bringing excellent acting and energy to every role he played.
