NDA to Clear Obstacles Ahead of Women’s Reservation, Says PM

  • A day after the government could not pass the Constitution (131st Amendment) Act and the Delimitation Bill — which were meant to bring 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies — Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the NDA is still fully committed to removing all hurdles in the way.
  • Speaking to the nation on Saturday, he strongly criticised the Opposition, saying they had “killed the idea of women’s representation before the whole world” by opposing the proposal.
  • He said that even though the NDA could not get the required 66% majority in the Lok Sabha on Friday to pass the women’s reservation, it still has the support of women across the country.
  • He claimed that “100% of women in the country support this move,” and said sorry to women, asking for their forgiveness. He also promised that every obstacle will be removed and repeated that the government is determined to make this happen.
  • He criticised Opposition parties like the Congress, DMK, Trinamool Congress, and Samajwadi Party (SP).
  • Talking about the moment when the Bill failed in the Lok Sabha, he said these parties were happy and were thumping desks, which he called an insult to the dignity and self-respect of women.
  • He said that these Bills are the “need of the hour” and reminded that he had assured in the Lok Sabha that all States will get increased representation in the Lower House.
  • He also spoke about the concerns of some southern States, which fear that delimitation could reduce their number of seats in a future 850-seat Lok Sabha.
  • He said that women across the country have seen everything, and they will give a strong answer to those who stopped their rights.
  • He warned that Opposition parties are taking “Nari Shakti” (women’s power) lightly, and said that while women can forgive many things, they do not forgive insults to their dignity and self-respect.
  • He also called the Congress an “anti-reform party”, saying it delays important national issues on purpose, including water agreements and matters with neighbouring countries.
  • He further accused Congress of opposing many major reforms like GST, reservation for poor people in the general category, removal of triple talaq, Uniform Civil Code, Waqf Board reforms, and help to refugees under CAA.

Iran shuts the Strait of Hormuz again amid U.S. blockade, with ships reportedly attacked

Tension increased again on Saturday as Iran once again closed the Strait of Hormuz after briefly reopening it. This happened after the United States continued blocking Iranian ports, and Iran reacted by firing at ships trying to pass through the strait.

  • Fresh attacks in this area, which carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, have raised fears of a global energy crisis and possible new conflict, especially as a weak ceasefire is set to end by Wednesday.
  • Iran said it had received new proposals from the United States, and that Pakistan is trying to arrange fresh talks between the two countries.
  • Iran’s military said that the Strait is now fully under its control again, and warned that it will continue blocking ships as long as the U.S. blockade continues.
  • Iran’s Revolutionary Guard boats fired at an oil tanker, and another unknown attack hit a container ship, damaging its cargo, according to a UK maritime agency.
  • For Iran, closing the strait is a powerful move that can disturb the global economy and put pressure on U.S. President Donald Trump.
  • For the U.S., keeping the blockade helps to increase pressure on Iran and weaken its already struggling economy.
  • Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, gave a strong warning, saying the navy is ready to defeat its enemies badly.
  • Just a day earlier, Iran had said it would reopen the strait after a 10-day truce between Israel and Hezbollah, which had helped reduce oil prices globally.
  • But President Trump said the S. blockade will continue fully until Iran agrees to a deal, especially after recent talks in Pakistan failed without any agreement.
  • The U.S. military said that since Monday, it has stopped 23 ships from reaching Iran.
  • Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Saeed Khatibzadeh, criticised the U.S., saying its actions are dangerous for the world and global economy, and warned that it could break the ceasefire.
  • Meanwhile, President Trump warned Iran not to “blackmail” the U.S. by threatening to close the strait again and again.
  • He said talks are still going on, but the U.S. will not give in to pressure, and added that more details about Iran will be shared soon, showing that the U.S. is taking a strong and strict stand.

U.S. extends Russian oil purchase sanctions waiver by one month

On Friday, Donald Trump’s government allowed a one-month extension for buying Russian oil that is already in ships, to help control rising energy prices.

  • This decision was made by the S. Treasury Department, just two days after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had said that such permission would not be extended.
  • The new rule allows countries to buy oil that was already loaded onto ships by Friday, and this permission will last until May 16 (04:01 GMT).
  • This is an extension of a similar relaxation that had ended on April 11.
  • Earlier in the week, Bessent had clearly said that the U.S. would not continue such relaxations for both Russian and Iranian oil.
  • Both the earlier and current relaxations were meant to reduce pressure on global oil supply, especially because of the war involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
  • This move was strongly criticised by U.S. Senate Democrats — Jeanne Shaheen, Chuck Schumer, and Elizabeth Warren — who called it “shameful.”
  • They said this decision is a complete U-turn (180-degree reversal) from what was promised earlier.
  • They also claimed that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has benefited the most from this situation, saying that Russia’s oil earnings almost doubled in March.
  • At the same time, after a meeting of G7 finance leaders, France’s Finance Minister Roland Lescure said that Russia should not gain from the crisis in Iran.
